Mark Hamill Still Horrified By The Wampa Scene in The Empire Strikes Back

Actor Mark Hamill, in a reply to a fan tweeted early this morning about being “horrified” by the Wampa scene in The Empire Strikes Back where he who played Luke Skywalker chops off Wampa’s arm in the ice cave on Hoth.

Mark Hamill, who is also an avid supporter for animal rights expressed his displeasure where his character Luke Skywalker had to cut off Wampa’s arm in The Empire Strikes Back film.

Memories came flooding back to Hamill when one fan posted a picture of a cake signifying the broken arm of Wampa in honor of National Cake day over the weekend. He tweeted, “Happy #NationalCakeDay! I wonder if Luke is celebrating with a severed wampa arm cake?

Hamill was upset and revealed in his tweet that he initially thought during the filming that the Wampa would be scared off by Luke’s lightsaber. “When filming scene I was assured my lightsaber swipe toward camera (creature not on set) would simply singe fur 2 scare him off-Horrified to later see amputation & unnecessary cruelty-Wampa was HUNGRY (not EVIL)-Luke would never do this,” replied Mark Hamell.

The special edition of Empire, is far more graphic and features the bloodied Wampa screaming in pain. Another Twitter user even pointed out that saying, “Heck, it was even in the book. Luke used the force to sense the Wampa’s mind.” Hamill then responded saying, “My acting was much better in the book.”

When one twitterati wondered whether Hamill was being sarcastic or serious, the actor replied that he was “serious.” There is no doubt that the Wampa scene in The Empire Strikes Back movie is extremely violent, and could have been avoided.

Mark Hamill will be reprising his iconic role of Luke Skywalker in the highly-anticipated upcoming film Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi, directed by Rian Johnson will hit the theaters on December 15, 2017. Apart from Mark Hamill, the film also stars Adam Driver as Kylo Ren, Gwendoline Christie as Captain Phasma, Andy Serkis as Snoke, Dohmnall Gleeson as General Hux, Oscar Isaac as Poe Dameron, Anthony Daniels as C-3PO, and Lupita Nyong’o as Maz Kanata.
