From India’s RRR creating history with Naatu Naatu song’s Oscar win to EEAAO bagging seven categories at the 95th Academy Awards, the prestigious Oscars 2023 live stream is the talk of the town among cinephiles. Though not all discussion is related to the winners – instances like the Oscar snub for Black Panther 2‘s Angela Bassett drew reactions while the Avatar 2 director James Cameron & Top Gun: Maverick actor Tom Cruise being a no-show also drew criticism and a conversation regarding their absence. Here’s a brief recap of Oscars 2023 based on social media reactions.
It’s a historic yet prideful moment for India, especially for the South Indian cinema industry as The Elephant Whisperers bagged the Best Documentary Short Film while RRR’s Naatu Naatu won the Best Original Song. MM Keeravaani and lyricist Chandra Bose accepted the Oscar but the film director S.S. Rajamouli cast Ram Charan, Jr. NTR and others were also present at the ceremony to celebrate their win.
The Oscar attendees first showered the Indian blockbuster with a standing ovation after the live performance of Naatu Naatu song. The dance piece was kicked off followed by a speech by presenter Deepika Padukone, the first Indian Bollywood actor to present an Academy Award. On Twitter, Praises were also directed toward Naatu Naatu song’s dance choreography Prem Rakshith for playing a pivotal role in getting the song on the trend list with the iconic dance steps.
Avatar: The Way of Water was snubbed from Best Picture, a category that had critics divided in their Oscars 2023 predictions. Still, the sequel won in visual effects with the award going to Joe Letteri, Richard Baneham, Eric Saindon and Daniel Barrett.
RRR winning Oscars 2023 for Naatu Naatu becomes a proud moment for India
Speaking of VFX, The Little Mermaid trailer was shown at the 95th Academy Awards but the Disney live-action featuring Halle Bailey mostly attracted flak from moviegoers and critics for its water effect sequences. Some also mocked the underwater shots in The Little Mermaid by comparing them to Avatar 2.
While the Oscar winners certainly got most of the spotlight – the presenters like Elizabeth Olsen with Andrew Garfield and Elizabeth Olsen with Florence Pugh also shined at the 2023 Oscars, which did not go unnoticed among fans and film critics. In fact, MCU fans – specifically Scarlet Witch, Black Widow and Spider-Man stans were excited to see the Marvel cast.
TLOU aficionados were glee over Joel actor appearing for the Oscars which led to a few jests on Twitter since The Last of Us episode 9 was also airing during the Oscars ceremony. Many celebrated the incident with EEAAO references calling, “PEDRO PASCAL is the true Everything Everywhere At the Same Time.”
Disappointed Angela Bassett fans & Oscars 2023 viewers celebrating EEAAO’s Michelle Yeoh winning the 95th Academy Award butt heads
Angela Bassett fans are up in arms over the Wakanda Forever star being snubbed for her MCU performance. The actress lost to Everything Everywhere All at Once‘s Jamie Lee Curtis. Many Oscar viewers felt Michael B. Jordan and Jonathan Major‘s shoutout to Angela Bassett saying, “Hi, auntie. We love you.” was the two Creed 3 stars acknowledging her Oscar snub. Moreover, EEAAO’s Stephanie Hsu fans were disappointed over Lee Curtis taking the Oscars too.
Angela Bassett’s reaction to losing the 95th Academy Award to Jamie Lee Curtis was seen by many pundits as “the defeated, broken look” as Grace Randolph stated. Nonetheless, MCU folks still got to celebrate Black Panther 2’s Ruth Carter winning the costume designer category.
Michelle Yeoh earned the limelight at the 2023 Oscar for being only the second woman to win the lead actress Academy Award in 95 years. Readers can check out reactions below.

This is a very good monologue:
Tom Cruise & James Cameron, the 2 guys who insisted we come to the theater, didn’t come to the building!
You know a show is too long when Jim Cameron won’t sit through it.
How did they not nominate Jim Cameron? What do they think he is, a woman?

Energy, optimism, partnership, winning against odds. #NaatuNaatu is not just a song: it’s a mini-epic movie. No wonder it had people everywhere rising to their feet. Even at the #Oscars I bow low to @ssrajamouli MM Keeravani & Chandrabose. 🙏🏽pic.twitter.com/6urWNclql5

The Whale’s Brendan Frazer and EEAAO’s Michele Yeoh winning the Oscars in their respective category led to a surprising throwback to The Mummy. It reminded many fans of the two stars playing their part in The Mummy franchise since Yeoh appeared in 2008’s Tomb of the Dragon Emperor alongside Fraser. Some fans jokingly tweeted, “This Oscar is for The Mummy”
The Animation Film community was also manifesting an Oscar win for Pinocchio and their expectation came true with the award being handed to Guillermo del Toro, Mark Gustafson, Gary Ungar and Alex Bulkley for Best Animated Feature Film. However, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish fans were disappointed the Shrek spin-off was snubbed with a similar sentiment from Turning Red stans.
Tom Cruise’s absence was eventually confirmed inadvertently by Elizabeth Banks who was on stage at the ceremony awards. The actress cum filmmaker also got to throw the spotlight on her recent critically acclaimed flick, Cocaine Bear. But from the looks of it, online dissent is sadly more glued towards discussing Elizabeth Banks tripping while walking on stage. Meanwhile, Top Gun: Maverick lead actor not appearing for the 95th Oscars led to more meme moments on the internet too.
In conclusion, EEAO stole 2023’s Oscars with wholesome moments such as when Michelle Yeoh said, “Ladies. don’t let anybody ever tell you, you are past your prime.” In addition, Ke Huy Quan being overwhelmed with emotions for his Academy Award win for Best actor in a supporting role had almost all Oscar attendees echoing the same teary-eyed feeling.
“For anyone who has a dream, keep your dream alive,” said the Everything Everywhere All at Once star before wrapping up his Oscar win speech. Huy Quan’s standing ovation when he witnessed Harrison Ford walk up to present the Best Picture Award is in itself one of the best wholesome moments at the Oscars 95.
Similarly, Brendan Frazer’s winning speech while holding the Best Actor Oscar award for The Whale was an emotional rollercoaster to watch. Everything Everywhere All At Once dominated with seven Academy Award wins, finally bagging Best Picture as well. It should be noted A24 came up on top for winning every single acting award at the 2023 Oscars.
The Oscars 2023 concluded with host Jimmy Kimmel marking the 95th Academy Award ceremony as the first in “number of Oscars telecast without incident” a shade aimed at Will Smith’s slap from the 2022 ceremony.
