“Accuracy is insane”: DC fans are loving Blue Beetle set photo leak revealing Reyes’ Scarab suit, praise film concept artist Datrinti

The Blue Beetle suit for Xolo Maridueña’s Jaime Reyes may have just one-upped every DC Film practical costume produced so far. Set photos from the Blue Beetle film have left fans in awe witnessing the alien Scarab suit in all its glory.

DC’s first Latino superhero film Blue Bettle is currently filming in Atlanta and an action set piece has revealed shots of the Cobra Kai star wearing the full suit with headgear and the scarab attached to Jaime’s spine. One video clip also showed Maridueña in action donning the costume and clearly, fans can’t keep their excitement at bay.

Some were comparing the suit to the likes of Aquaman’s golden armor in 2018’s Aquaman and others suggested it’s more similar to Blue Beetle from the animated Young Justice series. Film Twitter even applauded Tiago Datrinti for landing the concept artist gig for Blue Beetle. The artist is known for producing stunning artworks of comic book movie characters.  Readers can check out reactions below.

The Blue Beetle suit was also compared to Warner Bros.’s upcoming DC blockbuster, The Flash which has received flak from fans for its new red suit for Ezra Miller’s speedster. Though the studio has been in the spotlight for going all out on practical costumes, especially after reports that Shazam! suit cost an upward of $1 million. The added special effects in the post-production will surely ramp up the visual aesthetic of the blue scarab suit.

Angel Manuel Soto is directing Blue Beetle from a script penned by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer. Not a lot is known about the project except for the concept art revealed at DC FanDome 2021. But several casting announcements were reported by The Wraps’ Umberto Gonzalez with Susan Sarandon playing villain Victoria Kord, Bruna Marquezine as Penny, Elpida Carrillo, George Lopez, Adriana Barraza, Belissa Escobedo and Damián Alcázar as Jamie’s family.

Jamie Reyes’ is the third version to don the Blue Beetle after Ted Kord’s demise. The character created by Keith Giffen had its origin connected to Egyptian scarab but the latest iteration considers it alien origin rather than mystics.

Blue Beetle was initially set for HBO Max and later shifted to theatrical release slated for 2023. And speaking of suits, the first look at Black Manta’s new and improved costume was showcased at Licensing Expo 2022 along with Arthur Curry’s new attire.
