Alan Cumming Opens Up About Playing Nightcrawler In X2: X-Men United

To this day, Alan Cumming’s portrayal of Nightcrawler in Bryan Singer’s X2: X-Men United is much loved by fans. Moreover, back in 2012, the actor revealed that he was interested to play the character again in Days of Future Past.

Unfortunately, Nightcrawler was re-cast in the recent X-Men: Apocalypse. Though Cummings may never get to play the character again, the actor’s dark and funny portrayal will be remembered as the best.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly for the magazine’s recent issue, Cummings opened up that when he was offered the role, he wasn’t familiar with the original X-Men films.

I thought that was a positive thing. I had nothing to compare it to, and nothing to live up to in my mind. But at the beginning I would tell friends I was offered the part of this superhero who’s green and they would say, ‘No, he’s blue!’ I really had no Idea.”

Cumming got to play the role at a time when the comic book movie boom was still in its early stages. Although the actor seemed to have initially struggled to get into character, he himself revealed that the project X2: X-Men United was “one of the films I’d been in that I think of as really good,” during an interview with Coming Soon.

Cumming’s Nightcrawler in X2: X-Men United was also shown speaking in German. In fact, the actor took the time to perfect his accent with the foreign language so the character’s roots aren’t left out in the movie.

Fans will get to see the new version of the Nightcrawler played by Kodi Smit-McPhee once again in the upcoming X-Men: Dark Phoenix.  The film is scheduled to hit theatres on November 2nd this year.
