The Barbenheimer trend may help catapult Oppenheimer to join the billion-dollar club going by industry analyst predictions. The $100 million production budgeted biopic from Christopher Nolan has crossed the $600M milestone and is guaranteed to hit $800M. But it is also not far-fetched to expect the historical drama to tip just over 1 billion at the global box office.
Oppenheimer continues to sail steadily with no major drop at a 39% decline from an earning of $17.2 million this weekend. Grossing $262M domestically, industry experts and Nolan fans are pinning their hope on the Oscar contender film’s international release to cross $ 1 billion.
UPDATE (23 Sept): Oppenheimer has earned a massive $916M at the global box office.
According to box office analyst Luiz Fernando, Oppenheimer’s spectacular run overseas has it eyeing a $820M-$900M global run. Countries like Germany, France, Australia and India are among the top 10 markets to bring in big numbers. So it seems like Nolan’s biopic crossing a billion hinges on Korea, Italy and China.
Oppenheimer is yet to release in China, an international market that has proven to bring in the big bucks for Nolan Flicks. In fact, Tenet raked in $66M from the Asian region while Dunkirk earned $50M. Taking the Barbenheimer hype into consideration, one can hope for the historical drama’s box-office performance to outdo Nolan’s previous titles.
#Oppenheimer spectacular after a 7.7M 4th WED overseas, for a 350.7M intl.cume over 78 markets.
Added 241.8M US cume, #ChristopherNolan’s explosive hit hits a 593.5M Global cume at #BoxOffice!
600M+ TONIGHT!
Will cross 700M next WED
800M+ locked!

Irregardless of Barbenheimer, the fact that Oppenheimer is going to earn almost $1 billion is one of the most insane box office stories I’ve seen in years. https://t.co/b2Gj3zYYsb

Not impossible, if it’s huge in Korea, China and Italy, it could very well go even beyond 1B+
But until we see the actual debuts’ numbers, I rather be conservative and keep 900M as the ceiling. Once we see actual data confirming our suspicions, then will be time to recalculate!— Luiz Fernando (@Luiz_Fernando_J) August 10, 2023
Italy better do the one job it has to do hahaha!

This movie reaching $800m globally is a bigger deal than Barbie crossing a billion. Half the marketing budget and no global brand name behind it. Three hour, R-rated drama, partly in B&W. Just Nolan and IMAX. https://t.co/KuOUgDYNVK

oppenheimer getting that close to $1B is absolutely insane https://t.co/GMmf1GpInY

*If Korea and China make $100m, $900m is in the bag. *IF China and Korea make Inception/Interstellar numbers, Oppenheimer crosses the billion dollar mark. https://t.co/FYmpC3oVt6

Oppenheimer recently crossed 600 million worldwide, truly amazing for a 3 hour biopic set during World War 2. Question is for you is do you think it has even a slight chance of joining the billion dollar club? Let me know! #Oppenheimer pic.twitter.com/FHRbwGPxmm

In the biopic genre, 2018’s Bohemian Rhapsody holds the highest-grossing record with a $918M global run. Oppenheimer has already marked a historic record by earning $10M per day consecutively for 10 days dethroning Joker and Deadpool 2. So Chris’s latest entry stands a chance at taking the top spot by the end of its theatrical run.
Luiz Fernando also thinks its “not impossible” for Oppenheimer to cross $1 billion. “If it’s huge in Korea, China and Italy, it could very well go even beyond 1B+” but still remains “conservative” about his prediction until the debut number arrives.
Nolan’s biopic will premiere in China on August 30 while Greece, Italy and Bosnia and Herzegovina are all releasing on the same week between August 20-24. The Universal Picture title will arrive in the South Korean market on Monday, August 15. So Oppenheimer’s $1B possibility at the BO will be decided by the end of September.

Peakenheimer deserves to make that much, I wish it'd make over a billion but $900 million is definitely good enough https://t.co/im5zCQkuzd pic.twitter.com/17jjzJxWK3

Not that it really needs it, but it would be so fucking great if this hits a billion. Can we make it happen? Please. #Oppenheimer https://t.co/1YFncxh4oX

Meanwhile, Barbie, which managed to bring out moviegoers that haven’t visited a theater since prior to the pandemic stands at $1.13 billion worldwide as of Friday, 11 August. The barbenheimer double feature has clearly worked in favor of Warner Bros. Discovery as well as Universal Pictures.
