‘Almost $1 billion’: Oppenheimer eyes $900 million global box office run, Analysts & Christopher Nolan fans hopeful for historic $1B record under R-rated biopic genre

The Barbenheimer trend may help catapult Oppenheimer to join the billion-dollar club going by industry analyst predictions. The $100 million production budgeted biopic from Christopher Nolan has crossed the $600M milestone and is guaranteed to hit $800M. But it is also not far-fetched to expect the historical drama to tip just over 1 billion at the global box office.

Oppenheimer continues to sail steadily with no major drop at a 39% decline from an earning of $17.2 million this weekend. Grossing $262M domestically, industry experts and Nolan fans are pinning their hope on the Oscar contender film’s international release to cross $ 1 billion.

UPDATE (23 Sept): Oppenheimer has earned a massive $916M at the global box office.

According to box office analyst Luiz Fernando, Oppenheimer’s spectacular run overseas has it eyeing a $820M-$900M global run. Countries like Germany, France, Australia and India are among the top 10 markets to bring in big numbers. So it seems like Nolan’s biopic crossing a billion hinges on Korea, Italy and China.

Oppenheimer is yet to release in China, an international market that has proven to bring in the big bucks for Nolan Flicks. In fact, Tenet raked in $66M from the Asian region while Dunkirk earned $50M. Taking the Barbenheimer hype into consideration, one can hope for the historical drama’s box-office performance to outdo Nolan’s previous titles.

In the biopic genre, 2018’s Bohemian Rhapsody holds the highest-grossing record with a $918M global run. Oppenheimer has already marked a historic record by earning $10M per day consecutively for 10 days dethroning Joker and Deadpool 2. So Chris’s latest entry stands a chance at taking the top spot by the end of its theatrical run.

Luiz Fernando also thinks its “not impossible” for Oppenheimer to cross $1 billion. “If it’s huge in Korea, China and Italy, it could very well go even beyond 1B+” but still remains “conservative” about his prediction until the debut number arrives.

Nolan’s biopic will premiere in China on August 30 while Greece, Italy and Bosnia and Herzegovina are all releasing on the same week between August 20-24. The Universal Picture title will arrive in the South Korean market on Monday, August 15. So Oppenheimer’s $1B possibility at the BO will be decided by the end of September.

Meanwhile, Barbie, which managed to bring out moviegoers that haven’t visited a theater since prior to the pandemic stands at $1.13 billion worldwide as of Friday, 11 August. The barbenheimer double feature has clearly worked in favor of Warner Bros. Discovery as well as Universal Pictures.
