The end of the WGA strike continues to haunt projects that were greenlit prior to the protest and the Spider-Man spinoff, Silk: Spider Society is one such animated series that remains in limbo. The Writers Guild of America ratified its new deal with AMPTP at the start of October, allowing major studios to resume pre-production work on upcoming projects but the Silk series was not one of them.
Silk: Spider Society is apparently on ice, presumed to be on the back burner at Amazon Studios. The Cindy Moon-focused animated series was still in development before the Writers Strike and was expected to resume post-WGA’s deal. However, according to The Ankler, the Writers Guild sent a letter to Amazon threatening legal action for putting the show on hold.
Partnering with Sony, Amazon was also developing a Spider-Man Noir series though it is unclear if the Spider-Verse spinoff is also faced with a similar setback. While Oscar winners Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (the brains behind the Miles Morales-led animated universe) are attached to produce Silk: Spider-Society, Angela Kang (known for The Walking Dead) will write and serve as the showrunner.
Earlier casting reports unveiled that a Korean-American would voice Cindy Moon. The casting note also sheds light on the character’s background, detailing her as being in the age bracket of 19-29 years and a kid from Queens. A newbie superhero venturing out her life independently for the first time.
Meanwhile, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is expected to begin recording voiceovers but the threequel was delayed indefinitely. The news was met with applause since reports emerged of toxic working conditions.
MGM+ is also involved in the development of Silk: Spider Society, in a deal that gives them exclusive debut launch of the Spider-Man spinoff in the US followed by Prime Video streaming it globally. It is unclear if the show could also feature other well-known faces from the Spider-Man universe. Silk was originally greenlit in September 2020.
