While Ant-Man and the Wasp is just hitting theatres this week, talks about a possible Ant-Man 3 has already started gaining traction. Even director Peyton Reed is weighing in on the idea.
During a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Reed said that he has currently no idea if there’s an Ant-Man 3 film in the pipeline. However, the Ant-Man and the Wasp director said he is hopeful that a third installment of the Ant-Man franchise might likely take shape after the highly anticipated Avengers 4 movie is out.
“I’ll answer that question really honestly,” Reed said. “Who knows, because I suspect, I don’t know this, but I think any further announcement of the slate — the rest of this year is going to be about the next Avengers movie and the tea-up to that stuff. And then I think we are all hopeful.”
The director said that he even has a story in his mind for Ant-Man 3.
“Just the same as last time. We didn’t have any idea there would be a second Ant-Man until maybe a month or so after the first one came out,” Reed explained. “This was a giant question mar. With the first one, there was obviously behind the scenes drama that preceded me, but also, it’s Ant-Man. There was a question of, are people going to see this movie? It was not a fait accompli. It could have gone either way. I think we are all interested in doing one. There is a story to tell there. Definitely. There is a story we’ve talked about potentially. I’m very, very hopeful.”
During the interview, Reed admitted that he was quite nervous when he met Michelle Pfeiffer alone in a Marvel Studios conference room to pitch her the role of Janet van Dyne (the original Wasp). Janet van Dyne’s character was set up as Hank Pym’s (Michael Douglas) wife and Hope van Dyne’s mother (Evangeline Lilly) in 2015’s Ant-Man.
According to the storyline, Janet got lost in the mysterious Quantum Realm and could not return back. It was thought that reviving back from the Quantum realm was impossible only until Scott Lang aka Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) proved it was possible. So, basically, Ant-Man and the Wasp’s story focus on Scott Lang and Hope van Dyne as they go on a mission to bring back Janet’s character back to life.
