Actress Amber Heard’s Aquaman character Mera made its first debut in last year’s Justice League from director Zack Snyder. Mera was introduced as cameo in Justice League, but now, she has a much bigger role to play in this year’s Aquaman solo film.
During a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Heard revealed some specific details about her character in the upcoming DC Entertainment film.
“She’s a warrior who was raised by the queen of Atlantis before she passed,” the actress said. “We meet Mera after the queen has long since left and she’s been raised to take over as queen her whole life. She’s been raised to serve her kingdom and rule over Atlantis with King Orm (Patrick Wilson).”
Heard revealed that her character Mera is completely polar opposite to Jason Momoa’s Aquaman. While the underwater superhero is confused about his identity, lacks purpose and focus, Mera is very focused, disciplined and almost militaristic.
She’s very disciplined and almost militaristic,” Heard said. “She’s fully dedicated to saving her nation and that serves as an impetus to go to the surface world and elicit help from Arthur who’s the polar opposite of Mera — he lives in the moment, he’s confused about his identity, he lacks the purpose and focus that Mera has, which makes them an unlikely duo. But it’s that disparity that makes a nuanced relationship between them. Where one is strong the other is weak and those differences are a conduit for their bonding.”
When asked about her character’s costume in the film, Heard said that Justice League highlighted her militaristic side. But, in Aquaman, fans will get to her ser in civilian clothes, in fact, in one particular scene, she will be forced to dress as a normal human.
When asked the reason why Mera dislikes the surface world in the upcoming film, Heard said that her character has a natural antagonistic view of the surface world as she believes that human beings are to be blamed for the pathetic conditions of the oceans. She added that anybody living in the ocean world would feel that way.
When asked about her experience of working with Jason Momoa, the actress said his heart and personality is as big as he is. She revealed that the Aquaman actor has got a booming voice and his sense of humor isn’t satisfied unless he’s making people laugh. Director James Wan has already confirmed that the first Aquaman trailer will get released during Comic-Con next month. The film is set to debut in theatres on December 21, 2018.
