Aquaman: James Wan Breaks Down Use Of Practical FX & CGI In Fisherman Photo

Soon after a new image from James Wan‘s upcoming Aquaman featuring the Fisherman King (Djimon Hounsou) and the members from his kingdom was released, fans began debating if the new still was pure CGI or a mixture of practical FX with CGI.

Fortunately, The director came forward to throw light on how the cast members who play the Fishermen were put into makeup.

Taking to Twitter in response to a fan, Wan revealed that the team used a combination of both practical FX and CGI to complete the Fisherman people’s look in Aquaman.

Practical makeup-fx sculpted by @FracturedFX, and digital augmentation and environment by @MPC_Film. Lucky to have the top houses working with us on this film,” the tweet read.

Wan revealed that the team has used a lot of CGI to create the characters in the Aquaman world and enhance the makeup designs and environments, but, they have also incorporated practical makeup effects to create the look and feel of the beings who inhabit that world. The Fisherman people are actually comprised of practice FX on their top halves and CGI for their lower halves, which are their tail fins.

You can check out James Wan’s tweet as well as the first look at the Fisherman King picture below.

As explained by EW, the particular scene offers the first look at the royal palace of the Fisherman King, one of the seven kingdoms of Atlantis. In the scene, King Orm (Patrick Wilson) has gone to the Fisherman King to ask for his help to declare war on the ocean-polluting surface world.
