‘Aquaman vs Black Manta’: The Lost Kingdom teaser praised as visually spectacular, fans react to Atlantean King riding Sea Horse & Topo the Octopus, Amber Heard’s Mera & more

Aquaman (Jason Momoa) and Black Manta (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) go head-to-head in the teaser for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom but it is not the only visually pleasing moment that has fans finally excited for the sequel. James Wan’s anticipated underwater DCEU film is 100 days away from its release (as of this writing) but going by the eye-catchy depictions of creatures like Storm the Sea Horse, Topo the Octopus, the horrifying Trench – it might be enough to amp up excitement for its December release.

After much effort from fans & film pundits – WBD has begun marketing Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, starting off with a 30-second teaser to hype up the full-length trailer’s release set for Thursday. One of the highlights of the promo is Black Manta’s newly improved suit design while having him sport the iconic scar on his face. Moreover, shots of Ocean Master Orm were shown as well – a few are an extension of the scenes shown in the behind-the-scenes trailer revealed in October 2021’s DC FanDome.

The second installment clearly seems to be VFX heavy with some fans also noticing Queen Atlanna (Nicole Kidman) in action but appears to be fully CGI-ed. In the case of Mera (Amber Heard), while the Atlantean princess is not in the spotlight, some fans notice Amber Heard’s character running alongside Queen Atlanna in the scene where the house near the lighthouse is set on fire. It’s unclear if the filmmakers decided to reduce Mera’s appearance after the controversy surrounding the actress.

It appears to be Tom Curry’s home at Amnesty Bay on fire, possibly a retaliation by Black Manta for the events that occurred in 2018’s Aquaman. The first film opens with Arthur Curry leaving Manta’s father to die in the flooding submarine, motivating him to build the suit using Atlantean tech.

The sequel is also bringing back a familiar creature from the debut feature – Topo the Octopus. The eight-tentacled sea creature is shown holding on to Storm the Sea Horse as Aquaman appears out of the sea riding it.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom faces shortest marketing efforts for a follow-up to DCEU’s billion-dollar film

Aquaman 2 has been muddled with negativity over its lukewarm reception from test screenings and extensive reshoots. In addition, the late marketing campaign did not go unnoticed as well. Even box office analysts like Luiz Fernando pointed out that Aquaman 2 faces “one of the shortest marketing campaigns for a film this size”

But on the bright side, the 30-second clip has moviegoers praising the sequel & hoping James Wan’s magic that spelled success for the first film repeats. The full trailer will be released on Thursday.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will splash in theaters on December 20, 2023.
