‘Avengers: Infinity War’: Director James Gunn Influenced Groot’s Appearance In The Film

Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War — The Art of the Movie has revealed a lot of details about how the biggest superhero movie of all-time was envisioned to be and how it finally turned out. In addition to revealing concept arts designed for various characters, Marvel’s concept art team has also offered some interesting reveals from the people who worked on Infinity War.

It has been revealed that Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn, who was involved in the making of Avengers: Infinity War along with director Anthony and Joe Russo, had a major influence on Groot’s appearance in the film. Marvel Studios Sr.VisDev Artist also pointed out details from Groot’s design which were done on the advice of Gunn.

James Gunn also wanted to add a bit of an ungroomed attitude where he does not clean up after himself, like trimming his greenery in those awkward spaces and adding a little belly to show him not caring about his appearance,” artist Anthony Francisco revealed on Groot’s physical design.

The fan-favorite Groot was also one of the victims of Thanos’ devastating snap.

Fans must also note that it was Gunn who wrote the comedic “Invisible scene” involving Drax in Infinity War. Its currently unknown if the director was also involved in such a manner for Avengers 4.

Storyboard artist Byran Andrews also revealed that one version of Captain America’s return sequence in the movie involved Santa Claus. Unfortunately, the sequence was not finalized to be included in the final cut for it being “too much.”

There were a few versions of the Edinburgh sequence,” Andrews revealed. “At first, the Russos had it set during the winter festival. Large crowds, snow, and Cap and the gang were already on-site trying to find Vision and Wanda in a crowd of Santas when the Children of Thanos arrive. Lots of fun stuff, but it was too much. Sometimes less is definitely more.”

Recently, it was also explained how Thanos survived Titans’ destruction. The Mad Titan was reportedly exiled from his home planet for proposing to wipe out half of the planet’s population to save the rest.

It is expected that Avengers 4 might throw some light on Thanos’ backstory when it arrives in theatres on May 3, 2019.
