Avengers: Infinity War: Directors Explain How Thanos Payed Physical Price After Using Infinity Gauntlet

The main motto of Avengers: Infinity War’s Thanos was to balance the world by wiping off half of the universe’s population and he did manage to do it with the help of the Infinity Gauntlet. As everything big requires some sacrifice, for Thanos it was the sacrifice of his daughter Gamora that helped him bag the Soul Stone. Notably, the Mad Titan even had to pay a physical price to get there.

A recent Avengers: Infinity War screening by Collider was followed by a Q&A session with the film directors Joe and Anthony Russo who offered some insight into what physical price Thanos paid to use the Infinity Gauntlet. The directors mentioned the scene in which Thor gets his new weapon Stormbreaker into the Mad Titan’s chest.

It’s evident,” Joe Russo said. “His daughter is an emotional price, but the physical price is – you’ll see it if you pause your DVD – right before he uses it to go back into the portal away from Thor while he’s got the ax in his chest, his arm is burnt to a crisp. So the physical price is the extreme power that it took to enact his plan, he paid for physically, and when he sits down on the steps at the end of the movie you can see that it actually carries up into his neck and onto his face.”

When Joe was asked about the Infinity Gauntlet and if it was still usable after it got burnt up in Thanos’ hand, he didn’t give a clear answer. Joe said, “[Thanos’] arm is f**cked up and anything attached to his arm is f**cked up.”

However, he did confirm that Thor’s Stormbreaker is powerful enough to counteract the Infinity Gauntlet.

It certainly has the ability to counteract the Infinity Gauntlet,” Joe said.

Anthony Russo also chimed in between and offered a more detailed response regarding Thanos’ thought process when Thor attacks him with Stormbreaker.

I think that key moment, though, is that Thanos was caught off guard,” Anthony said. “He literally just didn’t know the power of what was coming at him. I mean, maybe he could have used the Stones in a different way had he understood what that weapon was, but it came out of nowhere.”
