Avengers: Infinity War directors Anthony and Joe (Joseph) Russo, in a recent interview, spoke about borrowing inspiration from ’90s heist films. They also spoke in detail about the heist style narrative of Thanos in the film.
The Russo brothers would have by the end of 2019 directed four films for Marvel movies – Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War (due to release in 2018), and the untitled Avengers 4, which will hit the theaters in 2019. The Infinity War will bring together all elements from the MCU, and that includes Thor: Ragnarok, which will release this week in North America.
In an exclusive interview with Cnet at the Pinewood Atlanta Studios, the Russo brothers talked about their experience working for MCU, and Avengers: Infinity War in particular. They termed Thanos as the biggest element in the film. When asked about their love of subverting genre, Anthony Russo said, “With Infinity War, the biggest new element to the movie is Thanos and the fact that he’s entering the storytelling in a very bold, strong way, to the degree that he’s almost one of the leads. We’ve shaped an interesting narrative around him that in some ways leans heavily on a heist film in the fact that he’s going after the infinity stones in a much bolder, successful way than he has in the past. The entire movie has that energy of the bad guy being one step ahead of the heroes. We looked at a lot of movies that had that heist-style energy to them, [and] that brought some inspiration.”
The resentful and horrifying character Thanos played by Josh Brolin is undoubtedly the key element in Avengers: Infinity War. During an earlier interview, Brolin had spoken about the wonderful experience he had working with Russo brothers and essaying the role of the big bad guy. He had said, “. It’s just a different type of acting, but then when they showed me a little six-minute teaser of a scene that I had done, I was so blown away by how next-level this digital process is and how real it feels. I don’t know how I could be anything but happy. If everybody hates me at the end of it, I don’t know, will it be worth it if it’s a great movie? Maybe.”
It has long been hinted that Thanos gets the limelight instead of the ensemble in Infinity War. Going by what Anthony Russo had to say, it looks like Thanos’ move in finding and acquiring the infinity stones will catch the Avengers off guard. Furthermore, it will be interesting to see how the shattered team will react to the Mad Titan’s “much bolder” attempt in going after the infinity stones.
Avengers: Infinity War is scheduled to hit the theaters on May 4, 2018, while the Avengers 4 movie is expected to release on May 3, 2019.
