The events that occurred in Captain America: Civil War changed the ensemble that fans witnessed in The Avengers and Age Of Ultron. While several characters were affected by the Civil War events, it looks like it has also had its toll on Tony emotionally and fans will get to see the character face it in Avengers: Infinity War.
To recall, the film ended with the Avengers in disarray. Fans saw the Avengers’ conflict over the Sokovia Accords that required the MCU superheroes to act under official regulation.
While Black Widow, Black Panther, War Machine, Vision, and the later on addition Peter Parker stood in favor of Iron Man with signing the Accord and wanted the ensemble to be regulated, the rest namely Hawkeye, Falcon, Bucky Barnes, Ant-man, Scarlet Witch were against it with Captain America claiming that government control was an invasion of their freedom.
The further events that took place in Civil War resulted in distancing Tony and Cap from each other due to what Bucky did as the Winter Soldier. But it looks like Tony may have come to realize his mistake although he still may not be in place to forgive.
In a recent interview with The Telegraph, the Russo brothers were asked about pushing Tony’s conflict with his personal life and life as Iron Man forward in Civil War. Joe Russo responded that Robert Downey Jr. was ready to take the character to the point where “he could be perceived as the villain of that story” although that wasn’t the result as there were “no winners“. Here’s how the director put it.
“It was Kramer vs. Kramer, and it was a really messy divorce,” Joe said. “You love both your parents, and you don’t want to see that happen. But it did.”
Joe went on to add that Stark will move forward with guilt in Avengers: Infinity War about what happened in Captain America: Civil War.
“So moving forward into Avengers: Infinity War, Tony is in a place where he harbours guilt about what happened,” the Avengers: Infinity War director added. “But I don’t know if he’s ready to forgive. This movie is a ticking-clock film. Once it starts it doesn’t stop until the end. We refer to it as a smash and grab heist movie. Once Thanos starts collecting the stones, he’s doing it with speed. So Tony doesn’t have a lot of time to reflect. He only has time to act. But I think that the ramifications of Civil War reverberate deeply throughout Avengers: Infinity War.”
It looks like the events that unfolded in Civil War will play a bigger role than anticipated in Avengers: Infinity War. Earlier, the directors also teased at a scene from the Civil War film teasing its prominence for the upcoming threequel.
We will find out more about the MCU superheroes when Avengers: Infinity War releases on April 27th.
