Barbie early review: critics praise Margot Robbie’s heartfelt performance, social media reactions say Greta Gerwig’s film has “feminist twist”, fans react to Nicki Minaj & other celebs’ red carpet looks

The verdict on Greta Gerwig‘s Barbie movie starring Margot Robbie & Ryan Gosling has critics calling it an entertaining romp with a feminist twist. Warner Bros. held its red carpet event with a pink-themed palette for its Los Angeles premiere and stars such as Dua Lipa, Nicki Minaj, and Gal Gadot glammed up the event with their presence.

From praises over the costume & set designs like the doll Dreamhouse to acclaim for performances from the star-studded cast and original score – the Barbie movie looks like a home run for Greta Gerwig. The few social media reactions from critics like Carla Renata also praised the Shang-Chi star, “I was living for the dance numbers led by Simu Liu“. The Mattel-based feature is the most anticipated flick and has become a Pop Culture phenomenon for being lined up set against Oppenheimer.

Several early reviews applaud Barbie as a “heartfelt” experience while calling for an Oscar nomination for Margot Robbie & Ryan Gosling. The Blade Runner 2049 star is a “scene stealer” for delivering most of the humor in the movie.

The only criticism so far appears to be over the lack of screentime for “other characters experiencing important arcs” as noted by Collider’s Perri Nemiroff. But even that early social media reaction praised the “costume & production design.”

There was no question that the Greta Gerwig-helmed flick would deliver a feminist twist by the end critic @iamtycole wrote in a tweet, “It peels the layers off the superficial doll we all grew up with while showing how Ken is more than an asset and is figuring his identity out.”

It’s safe to say Nicki Minaj’s stunning pink carpet appearance in her lavender dress did more to amplify the feature’s social media reach during the premiere event. While Nicki Minaj was essentially the showstopper of the Babie red carpet – Margot held her ground too, wearing a black gown that appears to be a nod to the “Solo in the Spotlight” Barbie edition released in 1960.

Similarly, Dua Lipa appeared donning a dazzling mesh gown (in sync with her character’s Mermaid look) while Wonder Woman star Gal Gadot wore a classy brown outfit flaunting her sideboob. The film’s Ken actor Ryan Gosling sported an elegant Gucci suit but his “E” lettered necklace received more spotlight for its wholesome story behind it – the La La Land store wore it to honor his partner Eva Mendes.

The real-life Barbies of Hollywood certainly kept the paparazzi engaged and their dazzling appearances have put the movie on the trend list on Twitter. Readers can check out reactions below.

With critics’ approval for Greta Gerwig’s first major feature, the potential blockbuster could be the director’s first step into moving in that direction after a long stint with indie dramas. The filmmaker’s agent revealed in an interview that she intends to become a “big studio director” and is interested in helming a superhero film.

Barbie movie arrives in theaters on July 21.
