An extended version of Barbie re-releasing on IMAX has intrigued fans over the possibility of director Greta Gerwig hinting at a potential sequel. But it seems the new scenes are rather bonus clips shown as a featurette but also include easter egg-Esque references to Magic 8 Ball, Barney & more. The IMAX version includes 8 minutes of extra footage rounding up the runtime to 2 hours compared to the theatrical version which clocks in at 1 hour and 54 minutes.
After a triumphant box office journey leading to over $ 1.4 billion in returns globally, the critically & fan acclaimed Margot Robbie starrer movie arrived on VOD. But Warner Bros. Pictures have not completely given up on its theatrical run yet. The version with an added 8 minutes worth of footage is currently being screened but it has been reported that the extra content plays after the credits.
Fortunately, an audience member from one of the IMAX screenings has shared details on the BTS clips, deleted scenes and improv shots shown during the end-credits sequence. Though initially, it starts off with an introduction from Greta Gerwig.
The featurette includes scenes detailing the creation of Ken and Allan but it is unclear if the sequences are deleted scenes that didn’t make it to the final cut. Next up, is an extended improv of Ken singing “Boys Just Wanna Have Fun” while playing the drum pad. In addition, several more extended scenes of Matt CEO, Barbie puzzled over who she should date were apparently included. One sequence showed the Mattel CEO suggesting Magic 8 Ball, Barney & Thomas the Train as Barbie’s next boyfriend.
Mattel was revealed to be actively developing a Barney project and a PG-13 live-action feature of Magic 8 Ball. WB & Mattel could be testing the waters to gauge audiences’ reactions to the references.
Several more bloopers were included in the post-credits featurette where Ncuti Gatwa‘s Ken asks Emma “What is Beach Off?”. Readers can check it out in the Reddit post below.
Hopefully, the featurette shown in the Image maximum version will be included in the Blu-ray edition of the Mattel-based feature. It is currently not available on the SVOD digital version available to purchase on Apple TV, Prime Video, etc.
While Warner Bros. Pictures is yet to officially announce a sequel – Gret Gerwig has shown interest in returning to direct, “There’s a tone and a humor and a joy, and obviously the world is so beautiful,” Gerwig speaking to NY Times. “I want to go back to Barbie Land.” a potential second installment.
The Barbie IMAX version is currently available in select theaters.
