Back in 2017, fans got excited when they got to knew that Avengers director Joss Whedon had signed on to write and helm a Batgirl movie. But, earlier this year, Whedon announced his departure from the Warner Bros. and DC Film’s highly anticipated project citing his failure to come up with a compelling story for the Batgirl film.
Variety recently caught up with Joss Whedon at the World Premiere for Avengers: Infinity War in Los Angeles. When Whedon was asked what exactly made him to move on from the project, he revealed that his story idea for the film sort of crumbled.
“It had been a year since I first pitched the story, and a lot had happened in that year,” Whedon said. “And I felt some of the elements just wouldn’t work as well. The story just sort of crumbled in my hands. There were elements I hadn’t mastered and after a long time felt like I wasn’t going to.”
Whedon revealed that he lied to people that he left the project as he didn’t have any idea for the film. He had an idea but that didn’t fit in the space anymore. The Avengers director also admitted that his decision to leave the Batgirl project was heartbreaking for him as he was quite excited to helm the project. You can check out the interview video below.
Some fans still believe that Whedon’s split from WB was due to the Justice League debacle. Whatever the case may be, fans are now happy that Batgirl is back on track now as the film studio has roped in Birds of Prey screenwriter Christina Hodson to write the film’s screenplay. WBs search for a director is still underway. More information about the project is expected to come up soon.
WB is currently busy promoting the studio’s solo movie lined up for the year, Aquaman, which will debut in theaters on December 21, 2018.
