While Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice failed to impress the critics and some part of the audiences, the film did get a lot of appreciation for the cinematographic work by Larry Fong and his team. Fong, who is very active on social media, makes it a point to reply to at least some of the fans questions about the film.
The cinematographer recently shared a short Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice behind-the-scenes clip in answer to a fan asking him about a particular shot from the movie. The fan asked Fong if he had worked on the iconic Batman shot from Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns that was used in Batman v Superman.
Fong replied that he had shot the said scene and also shared the BTS clip of Ben Affleck in full Batman avatar escaping an incoming attack from Doomsday and leaping across a building. The clip shows Affleck land safely on a crash pad located beneath the face of the building. If you notice, Batman’s cape is missing in the scene. The cape is often created using CG especially in action- or stunt-heavy scenes where it might get in the way.
In the movie, the particular scene shows up during the film’s climactic battle with Doomsday. It was used in almost every promotional trailer and TV spot for the movie. You can check out the video in the post below.
Last week, during the ComicBook Debate podcast, when Fong was asked about the film being unsuccessful at the box office, he admitted that the film’s failure hurt him a lot as he had put a lot of hard work into the movie.
“It kind of hurts because, you know, I put almost a year of my life, including my whole crew, you know living away from our families, making a lot of sacrifices to make a movie like that,” Fong said. “And, everyone has their opinion. Does everyone have to love the movie? Of course not, but it’s like your baby; you put a lot of work into it.”
He said that while he got compliments for his work on Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, it did not matter to him as the film’s success is measured as a whole and not in bits and pieces.
“You know, visually I feel like me and my crew killed it, so when you hear things about it, it kind of hurts,” Fong added. “But, to be honest the weirdest thing — I’ve never really talked about this — but the weirdest thing, and this has happened a lot, I’ll have a stranger come up and say, ‘You know, Batman v Superman really sucked, but don’t worry, what you did was great. It looked really good. It wasn’t your fault.’”
