Batfleck is not done yet with the DC Extended Universe! That’s right DC fans, actor Ben Affleck has been confirmed to don the cape as Batman in the upcoming The Flash movie directed by Andy Muschietti. Moreover, as earlier revealed, the 48-year-old’s brooding masculine version of the caped crusader won’t be the only Batman in the speedster DC film either.
Since 2017’s Justice League, Affleck had stepped aside from the Batman role and turned towards other projects while dealing with personal issues. The move gave way for Warner Bros. to introduce a new younger version of the Dark Knight, which will be played by actor Robert Pattinson in Matt Reeves’ The Batman franchise. However, it looks the studio has also found the answer to making room for more than one Batman to make his presence in the larger DC Extended Universe – Multiverse.
Ben Affleck as Batman cameo role for The Flash movie confirmed!
The Flash movie, currently set to release in summer of 2022, will see Barry Allen – the speedster played by Ezra Miller run through different parallel dimensions where the superheroes will meet other vesions of the DC heroes. The movie is expected to take inspiration or adapt DC’s 2011 Flashpoint comicbook crossover series.
“His Batman has a dichotomy that is very strong, which is his masculinity—because of the way he looks, and the imposing figure that he has, and his jawline —but he’s also very vulnerable,” Muschietti said in an interview with Vanity Fair. “He knows how to deliver from the inside out, that vulnerability. He just needs a story that allows him to bring that contrast, that balance.”
Fans must note that Affleck only got to see The Flash script at the end of last week and agreed to be part of the DC film project this week. Moreover, Deadline notes the Batman appearance as a cameo role.
The Flash movie to explore Multiverse concept with original Batman from Zack Snyder’s Justice League?
“He’s a very substantial part of the emotional impact of the movie. The interaction and relationship between Barry and Affleck’s Wayne will bring an emotional level that we haven’t seen before,” the director added. “It’s Barry’s movie, it’s Barry’s story, but their characters are more related than we think. They both lost their mothers to murder, and that’s one of the emotional vessels of the movie. That’s where the Affleck Batman kicks in.”
“I’m glad to be collaborating with someone who has been on both sides of the camera, too,” Muschietti said. “He understands.”
Alongside Affleck, other alternate versions of The Batman will also appear in the speedster film. Michael Keaton’s Batman from the 1989 Tim Burton film and Muschiette explains that his role will be a “substantial” part.
The Flash movie first look confirmed for DC FanDome event
The director went on to explain that Batfleck is “the original Batman” for Ezra’s Flash since his first encounter with the caped crusader was in Justice League. Muschiette believes that seeing Flash venture around with other Batmen without Affleck’s version wouldn’t work. “He’s the baseline. He’s part of that unaltered state before we jump into Barry’s adventure,” the director said. “There’s a familiarity there.”
It seems like The Flash movie will be the stepping stone for Warner Bros. DCEU as it ventures towards introducing a larger unified Multiverse. And perhaps, that could help every version of DC’s classic heroes feel inclusive in the DC Universe.
More details regarding the speedster movie will come directly from the director during his panel for DC FanDome: Hall of Heroes on Saturday. Stay tuned for more updates.
