Whether it is the 95th Academy Awards or the LAFCA – the term ‘Best Picture’ is on every cinephile & movie pundit’s minds as discussions on this year’s best films are at an all-time high with studios like Disney campaigning for MCU titles such as Thor: Love and Thunder to be considered for an Oscar nomination.
The Mouse house’s Marvel Studios has submitted Thor 4 in six categories namely for Best Picture for Kevin Feige and Brad Winderbaum, Best Director for Taika Waititi, Best Actor for Chris Hemsworth, Best Actress for Natalie Portman, Best Supporting Actress for Tessa Thompson and Jaimie Alexander, Best Supporting Actor for Christian Bale, Waititi and Russell Crowe.
The Film Twitter community seemed especially surprised by Marvel’s campaign as many pointed out issues with visual effects which drew a lot of flak. It should be noted that Marvel has also put forward Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness for the 2023 Oscar consideration in all six categories. With studios putting the spotlight on its best movies, the recent LAFCA Award helped 2022’s features receive more recognition like RRR director S.S. Rajamouli earning the Runner-up title for Best Director. TAR director Todd Field was the winner in that category.
