It seems Sony Pictures is finally making strides to explore characters from the Spider-Man Universe, specifically standalone spinoffs for Black Cat and Spider Gwen. Sony’s collaborating with Marvel Studios has opened up opportunities to finally explore the Spider-Man Universe further than just Peter Parker. The folk at Giant Freakin Robot have heard from their trusted insiders that The Queen’s Gambit star Anya Taylor-Joy is being eyed for Black Cat. Furthermore, The Amazing Spider-Man actor Emma Stone is being considered for Spider Gwen, as reported by leaker MyTimeToShine (via The Illuminerdi).

Early rumors before Spider-Man: No Way Home’s release suggested a Rhino and Sandman project was also reportedly in development at Sony. It could be the studio’s interest to further explore its shared Marvel Universe has been slowly taking shape behind the scenes.

Although Stone did not appear in No Way Home, the character’s emotional arc from The Amazing Spider-Man 2 had a strong impact on the MCU threequel’s storyline. In fact, many fans have been campaigning for the studio to greenlight a third installment featuring Andrew Garfield to complete the Amazing Spider-Man franchise.

It currently seems like Taylor-Joy and Stone are the first in consideration for the roles and it wouldn’t come as a surprise since it’s what fans have been asking for as well. While Black Cat hasn’t had an on-screen presence yet, fans got a taste of Hailee Steinfeld’s Spider-Gwen in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and will see her return in the animated sequel, Across the Spider-Verse. Added, Stone did play as Gwen Stacy in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 but ends up dying by the end.

Fans are advised to take this news with a grain of salt as the reports are not verified and could actors are eyed for several roles in Hollywood and some break apart during negotiation stages. It remains to be seen if Sony would actively pursue these standalone projects for the near future.
