Black Panther introduced the first black Marvel superhero to the world and audiences accepted him with big applause. The film earned more than $700 million in the U.S. and nearly $1.35 billion worldwide.
To give a push to Black Panther in the film awards season, the filmmakers have released a new featurette, entitled “Welcome to Wakanda,” which includes some behind the scene clips and interviews of the film’s director Ryan Coogler, and other cast members including actors Chadwick Boseman (T’Challa), Angela Bassett (Ramonda), executive producer Nate Moore, and production designer Hannah Beachler explaining what went into making the epic film.
In the clip, director Ryan Coogler says Black Panther is a take on a modern African hero and a vision of what an uncolonized Africa might look like.
“Wakanda represents for us: Africa. [It’s] like a fantasy of what could be if African people had control of their own resources,” Coogler says in the video clip. “And the idea was that it was a place more technologically advanced than anybody could imagine.”
Actor Chadwick Boseman explains how creating Wakanda was also a part of his role as it was important for all the actors to make the world look real.
Actress Angela Bassett, who plays T’Challa’s mother Ramonda, reveals that the movie was all about tapping into ancient Africa, which she recalls is about “the kings and queens, the languages and conversations and songs that we’ve forgotten.”

Black Panther currently has Golden Globe and Critics’ Choice nominations for Best Picture and Best Score as well as two Screen Actors’ Guild Awards nominations, including Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture.
