‘Captain Levi cosplaying as Joker’: Suicide Squad Isekai from WIT Studios gets DCU fans excited for Himiko Toga lookalike anime Harley Quinn, spot hints for Peacemaker & Deadshot

AOT’s Captain Levi Ackerman lookalike Joker and a My Hero Academia’s Himiko Toga-Esque anime Harley Quinn are not what DCU fans expected from Suicide Squad Isekai. Nonetheless, the first look reveal for the DC Universe adaptation anime series has fans sold solely over the involvement of WIT Studios but the design choices and the lack of other Task Force X members such as Deadshot & Captain Boomerang have fans divided.

DC’s Suicide Squad franchise is getting an anime makeover from WIT Studios – the Japanese animation production company that worked on the first three seasons of Attack on Titan. Speaking of which, Suicide Squad Isekai has anime stans intrigued over the design choice with some appreciating the animators for making a Captain Levi Ackerman-inspired Joker while others are divided over its portrayal possibly teasing a Yaoi-Esque interpretation.

The show will explore a world outside Gotham City in what looks like a fantastical realm with flying dragons, mystical floating stones & mutated Pigs in a medieval setting. The promo shows Amanda Waller – the brains and leader of the Suicide Squad though no other Task Force X members were spotted prompting questions if this is rather a Harley & Joker story.

Fans are shocked to notice Levi Ackerman’s inspiration for the clown prince of crime in Suicide Squad Isekai

The clown Prince of Crime’s character design appears to have taken liberty in making a few minor changes like painting the clown’s smiling lip and concealing his natural mouth. Though the biggest takeaway is the similarities to Levi Ackerman from Attack on Titan.

Similarly, Harley fans feel Quinzel’s physical structure looks familiar to Himiko Toga from My Hero Academia. Though it would not come as a surprise since the anime has leaned into dropping nods to the DCU’s villain as well. In addition, David Ayer‘s Suicide Squad followers also pointed out Margot Robbie‘s Harley persona appears to be an inspiration for this iteration though it can be argued that DC has more or less adapted this version as the current canon takes with even Max’s Harley Quinn series adapting it.

Also, Joker’s painted smile was first shown in concept art for Ayer’s DC film. Readers can check out reactions below.

It is not Warner Bros. Japan’s first swing at the Isekai genre with the debut attempt coming from 2018’s Batman Ninja. Isekai, as the genre’s name suggests, translates to “different world” on the lines of Chronicles of Narnia. While the Batman-centric anime feature was critically acclaimed with an 80% it did not float well with Dark Knight fans.

Suicide Squad fans disappointed by the announcement teaser for featuring just Harley & Joker can remain hopeful the show will introduce others from Task Force X. In fact, the Harley character poster for Isekai teases Peacemaker and Deadshot. Quinn is shown sporting pin badges of the anti-villains on her attire.

Directed by Eri Osada from a screenplay by Tappei Nagatsuki and Eiji Umehara, Suicide Squad Isekai does not have a release date attached yet. The characters were designed by Naoto Hosoda
