Annette Bening is the latest addition to the cast of Marvel Studios’ female-led superhero film Captain Marvel. This will be Bening’s first comic book movie ever. Till date the actress has received four Oscar nominees for the films American Beauty, Being Julia, The Grifters, and The Kids Are All Right.
While details about Bening’s character in Captain Marvel have not yet been revealed, The Hollywood Reporter asserts that she might play a scientist in the upcoming film. Reporter Justin Kroll has tweeted a post that claims that the actress will most likely play the role of Carol Danvers’ mother.
Bening will join the Captain Marvel cast which already includes Brie Larson as Captain Marvel, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Jude Law as Mar-Vell, Lee Pace as Ronan the Accuser, Clark Gregg as Phil Coulson, Djimon Hounsou as Korath the Pursuer, Gemma Chan as Minn-Erva, and Ben Mendelsohn, Lashana Lynch, Algenis Perez Soto and McKenna Grace in yet-to-be-disclosed roles.
Directed by Mississippi Grind directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, Captain Marvel is currently filming in Los Angeles. Set in the 1990s, the film focuses on Carol Danvers, a U.S. Air Force pilot whose DNA gets mixed with that of the alien species leading to her becoming a superhero. The DNA fusion imbues her with the superpowers of strength, energy projection, and flight.
The film is inspired by the classic Avengers story “The Kree-Skrull War.” The character had a major tease in the post-credits scene of Avengers: Infinity War. It is rumored that Captain Marvel will be playing a major role in bringing Thanos’ down in the next Avengers 4 film.
Recently, during MTV’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, Avengers: Infinity War directors Joe and Anthony Russo explained why they chose not to include the female superhero character in the blockbuster film. While the Russo brothers revealed that Carol Danvers would be significant to Avengers 4, they chose not to go into any further details.
Captain Marvel will premiere in theatres on March 8, 2019, while Avengers 4 is set to release in May 2019.
