Disney’s panel at CinemaCon 2023 Day 3 commenced with a preview for Marvel Studios which showed teasing new footage from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 & The Marvels. But it wasn’t all MCU as Melissa McCarthy took the stage for the panel to talk about The Little Mermaid which was followed up with never-before-seen looks at upcoming line-ups such as Wish, Elemental, Gareth Edwards‘ The Creator, Taika Waititi‘s Next Goal Wins & more. Here’s a recap of the exhibitor event from insiders and journalists – including social media reactions to The Boogeyman.
The mouse house certainly brought its A-game for CinemaCon 2023 Day 3, offering audiences a taste of what’s to come from Pixar, Marvel Studios, LucasFilm, 20th Century studios and Searchlight Pictures. Beginning the panel with a nod to its 100-year milestone, first off was promos for their upcoming MCU films for 2023 namely Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and The Marvels.
After the preview, Melissa McCarthy discussed her Ursula role on stage and sang “Poor Unfortunate Souls”. Prior to playing an extended clip from The Little Mermaid during McCarthy’s presentation, Disney Animation also played exclusive footage for the Wish movie and a song by Ariana Debose too.
Chris Pine will play King Magnifico in Wish. Lucasfilm’s Star Wars universe was a no-show at CinemaCon 2023 but the studio offered a new clip from Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.
CinemaCon 2023 Day 3 Critics are buzzing with positive reviews for The Boogeyman, The Creator trailer & more
Disney is the first presentation of CinemaCon 2023 to provide 3D glasses for the 20-minute screening of Pixar’s Elemental. Journalists present during the footage’s presentation such as DisccusingFilm’s Andrew J. Salazar compared it to Zootopia for its “prominent themes about race relations” while Gizmodo’s Germain Lussier called it “smart, inventive” and “could be Pixar returning back to form.”
NEW at #CinemaCon: Disney opens up with Marvel Studios preview. They showed a new clip for #GotGVol3 & we watched the trailer for #TheMarvels, which looks great on the big screen. No other Marvel titles previewed. pic.twitter.com/KEpQ9ZjkHm

We just saw the first 20 minutes of @Pixar’s #Elemental in 3D and looks fantastic. Loved the animation and how it’s an original story. Can’t wait to see the rest of the film. #CinemaCon pic.twitter.com/Sgz3mpRHMw

Just saw the first 20 minutes of Elemental and, wow. The trailers have been good but once you see it in practice, it works so much better. It's so smart, inventive, and gorgeous, this could be Pixar returning back to form. #CinemaCon
— Germain Lussier (@GermainLussier) April 26, 2023
Wasn't expecting #Elemental to have prominent themes about race relations. Very similar to Zootopia but I wonder how the final result will play off?

Watching 20 minutes of #Elemental footage at #CinemaCon and it's completely charming and so whimsical! At one point, a fire character eats glass, spits it back out, tosses it like pizza dough and molds it into shape. The premise didn't excite me at first, but now I'm all-in!

I'd seen much of this #Elemental footage already at Pixar but not in 3D. I continue to think it looks like a lovely and imaginative film. #CinemaCon

Post the 20-minute footage showcased for Elemental, journalist Jeff Sneider revealed in his timely updates from CinemaCon that Disney’s British executives took the platform to show a trailer for Taika Waititi’s NEXT GOAL WINS. The promotional footage has been released for worldwide viewing which features Michael Fassbender and is set to release on November 17.
Next up on the schedule was Gareth Edwards’ giant sci-fi epic The Creator starring Tenet‘s John David Washington and Gemma Chan. The exclusive CinemaCon 2023 trailer for Edwards’ sci-fi feature has District 9 vibes and follows a plot that explores a love story during a battle between humans and AI. The reactions to The Creator are all positive with some exclaims like “wows” from audiences, notes THR’s Aaron Couch. Washington plays a character “who appears to be a bodyguard for an Android child, set in the far future post an AI war.
Heard some audible "wows" after the trailer for Gareth Edwards' The Creator, starring John David Washington, who appears to be a bodyguard for a child android in the far future after an AI war. #CinemaCon

Woah! THE CREATOR from Garett Edwards looks awesome!! Big gritty action, dystopian future, robots, cool aircraft, and lots of emotion and heart. What a surprise for the Disney panel. #CinemaCon

The Creator is coming out on Sept. 29. Gareth Edwards' latest has massive scope, stunning visuals…people will be very excited about the trailer…the release date worries me #CinemaCon

THE CREATOR: Gareth Edwards is back in full force with a stylishly original sci-fi. Took my breathe away #CinemaCon

Another new trailer from Disney at their #CinemaCon presentation: THE CREATOR.
From Gareth Edwards and starring John David Washington. Very emotional sci-fi adventure. Gorgeous imagery. Lots of audible “wows” in the room.
Comes out September 29th.

The Creator debuted stunning first footage at #CinemaCon.
A story set in the distant future, following an apocalyptic war between humans and artificial intelligence. Looks brilliant.

Well dang, was just kind of blown away the trailer for The Creator, the new sci-fi drama from Gareth Edwards (Rogue One). Looks really cool and powerful. Felt like the big surprise here. You could tell people were way into it. #CinemaCon

The last presentation before kicking off The Boogeyman movie screening was the first trailer for A Haunting in Venice featuring Kenneth Branagh. The first footage and a poster were released confirming its theatrical release for September 15.
Disney’s 20th Century studios’ The Boogeyman screening was well-received by CinemaCon 2023 Day 3 audiences. Critics have praised director Rob Savage’s Horror feature with some also supporting the decision to put the Stephen King-based movie for theatrical release instead of streaming. Readers can check out the early social media reactions to The Boogeyman below.
THE BOOGEYMAN: An effective horror movie that marks a return to form for director Rob Savage after DASHCAM. He stages some very clever shots here & really milks the suspense. Above-average performance from Sophie Thatcher, too. Best part? An emotionally satisfying ending. See it!
— Jeff Sneider (@TheInSneider) April 27, 2023
I watched “The Boogeyman” at #CinemaCon & really enjoyed it! There’s a reason this film was bumped from streaming to theatrical & it deserves to be seen on the big screen. It’s beautifully shot, lit & well written. Sooo many great scares throughout all of it. Highly recommend!!! pic.twitter.com/DQpxvBCgND
— Matt Ramos (@therealsupes) April 26, 2023
#TheBoogeyman is a weird one. The scares are good, creatively using light to keep you second guessing what’s in the shadows.
I just wasn’t sold on the journey. The individual performance are good but there are moments that side track the would-be emotional satisfaction. pic.twitter.com/NpjXXg2eWJ

Got to see The Boogeyman at #CinemaCon2023, and I am a very happy Stephen King fan right now. Like the short story, it's a simple horror tale, but an effective and freaky one that delivers some great monster-centric scares. Definitely a "see it with a crowd" experience. pic.twitter.com/swUiGIr40I
— Eric Eisenberg (@eeisenberg) April 26, 2023
Since the social media embargo lifted on The Boogeyman film at CinemaCon, I can say that it's a slow-burn type of horror. There were a few jump scares and it reminds me of David F. Sandberg's Lights Out. My colleague, @inancytapia, fled the building after the first scare. So…..
— Gig Patta (@GigPatta) April 26, 2023
#TheBoogeyman: A totally sturdy, highly effective movie. Could be this year’s Smile. Doesn’t reinvent the wheel, but it doesn’t need to. Sophie Thatcher has big Mary Elizabeth Winstead energy in this one, and it’s always nice to see Chris Messina.
— Ben Pearson (@benpears) April 26, 2023
The upcoming film adaptation of Stephen King’s The Boogeyman was absolutely terrifying! I got to watch it today at CinemaCon and it’s an all-around great and scary horror film! pic.twitter.com/8HHiRfTLRw
— JO ΞYPΛUR (@JoeyPaur) April 26, 2023
Had a chance to see #TheBoogeyman at #CinemaCon! It is a super entertaining horror film that will remind you how scary the pitch black darkness can be, especially when you watch it without the lights on.

That’s it for the Disney presentation recap from CinemaCon 2023 Day 3 though with just one in-person guest (Melissa McCarthy) the buzz was not as exciting as their 2022 panel. Nonetheless, showcasing an extended car scene from LucasFilm’s Indiana Jones 5 seems to have been somewhat of a closure.
