If recent reports are to be believed Warner Bros and DC Entertainment are in the early stages of developing a feature film centered on Supergirl.

According to an exclusive Deadline report, 22 Jump Street and The Cloverfield Paradox fame screenwriter Oren Uziel has been roped to pen down the Supergirl film’s script. Uziel has also co-written the script for two upcoming video game movies including Paramount’s in-production Sonic the Hedgehog and WB’s upcoming adaptation of Mortal Kombat.

Notably, Warner Bros. and DC are currently undergoing a massive reconfiguration. There are already a lot of movies in the pipeline including Birds of Prey, The Flash, Suicide Squad 2, Batgirl, The Joker and more. Chalking out a Supergirl film reflects the film studio’s idea to create a new template for future Superman movies.

Supergirl is already a hit on the small screen. The character is currently being played by Melissa Benoist in the Greg Berlanti-produced TV series adaptation which is heading into its fourth season. The character first appeared in “Action Comics #252” from writer Otto Binder and illustrator Al Plastino.

In DC comics, Kara Zor-El aka Supergirl is the biological cousin of Kal-El aka Superman, with powers comparable to him. She was a teen when she escaped the doomed planet Krypton along with Clark Kent. After arriving on Earth, Supergirl adopted the secret identity of orphan Linda Lee and made Midvale Orphanage her home.

Rumors are that WB is searching for a female director to helm the Supergirl film, though the project is still a long way away from even getting ready for production. The film doesn’t have a producer attached at the moment. It remains unconfirmed if Superman will appear in the upcoming film.
