After a long wait and fans who decided to skip over the leaked trailer from earlier this week, the first trailer for Dark Phoenix is finally here and it seems it was worth the wait after all. The trailer begins with a flashback scene of a young Jean visiting Professor Charles Xavier who tries to convince her that she is not “broken” to be fixed.
It seems like Charles suppressed a very dark memory from Jean’s past which could also be a factor that aids in her transformation into the Phoenix. We get a glimpse of that memory possibly being the Flashback scene of the day Jean’s parents died in a car crash that was caused by her.
The trailer shows shots of Jessica Chastain in character as Smith, the film’s villain. Not much is revealed about the character but the actress did tease that she plays a role in pushing Jean towards the darkness.
It seems the X-Men’s initial encounter with Jean and their attempt to stop her leads to the death of a character, possibly Mystique from the looks of it. The death seems to cause a rift among the X-Men, especially Nicholas Hoult’s Beast who is shown standing beside Magneto & his team against Charles and the rest of X-Men.
From the looks of it, Even Magneto seems to fear Jean and the fellow mutants are divided over their decision in stopping her.
The trailer ends with a shot of Jean descending further into darkness and transforming into the Phoenix. You can check it out below.
Dark Phoenix hits theatres on February 14, 2019.
If you haven’t read the official synopsis yet, You can check it out below:
In DARK PHOENIX, the X-MEN face their most formidable and powerful foe: one of their own, Jean Grey. During a rescue mission in space, Jean is nearly killed when she is hit by a mysterious cosmic force. Once she returns home, this force not only makes her infinitely more powerful, but far more unstable. Wrestling with this entity inside her, Jean unleashes her powers in ways she can neither comprehend nor contain. With Jean spiraling out of control, and hurting the ones she loves most, she begins to unravel the very fabric that holds the X-Men together. Now, with this family falling apart, they must find a way to unite — not only to save Jean’s soul, but to save our very planet from aliens who wish to weaponize this force and rule the galaxy.
