Guardians of the Galaxy actor Dave Bautista, who plays Drax in the franchise, has again voiced his support for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 director James Gunn who was fired by Disney after some of his past offensive tweets and comments about pedophilia and transphobia resurfaced last month. He has been the director’s most vocal defender.
On Sunday when a Twitter fan asked Bautista if he would return to the Disney franchise after Gunn’s firing, he replied that working on the movie without the writer and director is not what he signed up for. He stated that he’ll still act in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 as he’s legally obligated to do so, but, the film without James Gunn just isn’t GOTG. Bautista said he now finds “pretty nauseating” to work for Disney especially after the incident.
“I will do what Im legally obligated to do but @Guardians without @JamesGunn is not what I signed up for. GOTG w/o @JamesGunn just isn’t GOTG,” replied Drax. “It’s also pretty nauseating to work for someone who’d empower a smear campaign by fascists #cybernazis. That’s just how I feel.”
Not only Dave but the entire Guardians of the Galaxy cast including Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Vin Diesel, Karen Gillan, Sean Gunn, Michael Rooker, Pom Klementieff and Bradley Cooper, has come forward to support Gunn. They have even signed an open letter calling out Disney to hire back Gunn for the next GOTG installment.
Despite all the support pouring in for Gunn, it seems unlikely that Walt Disney Studios is planning to rehire the filmmaker. According to Variety, Marvel and Disney feel that Gunn’s jokes are “unacceptable in the #MeToo era and are not in line with Disney’s family-friendly image”. So, it looks like there’s no chance of Gunn getting a second chance.
A new director for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is yet to be announced.
