DC Entertainment’s streaming Service, also known as DC Universe, is set to bring life to fan-favorite DC Comics antihero Swamp Thing. Recently, the network made the official announcement about the series already being in development.
For those who are not familiar with Swamp Thing, he is humanoid or monster created by Len Wein and artist Bernie Wrightson. According to The Hollywood Reporter report, Mark Verheiden (Battlestar Galactica, Daredevil) and Gary Dauberman (It and its forthcoming sequel) will be co-writing the script and executive produce the series. They will be joined by Aquaman’s James Wan as executive producer. The network has made a script-to-series order.
Comic book fans will remember several humanoid or monster incarnations of Swamp Thing in various storylines. The DC character made his first appearance in horror comic anthologies “House of Secrets” in the 1970s and gained huge popularity during the years of 70s and 90s. This is not the first time the superhero devoted to protecting his swamp home and humanity is coming to life. Previously, the comic book version of the character has inspired two movies Swamp Thing (1982) and The Return of Swamp Thing (1989). There have also been a live-action television series and a five-part animated series adaptation of the comic book.
Soon after the big announcement of the launch, the network released a logo and an official description of the upcoming show. The logo is just the title of the series set on a green backdrop. It only features a hand rising up with a tagline “Only on DC Universe.”
According to the official description, Swamp Thing begins when CDC researcher Abby Arcane returns to her childhood home of Houma, Louisiana for an investigation of a fast-growing swamp virus. Here, she finds scientist Alec Holland. However, their story ends in tragic separation. Meanwhile, the Houma is invaded by powerful forces with the evil intention of using swamp’s mysterious properties for their own use. In an attempt to save her home and find the love of her life, she begins her own investigation wherein she discovers several mystical secrets.
