Did Warner Bros. DC Studios CEO James Gunn hint at a Deadman project? That’s the message some DCEU fans have deciphered from The Suicide Squad director’s latest cryptic tweet on Halloween. The supernatural character came close to making a live-action debut in Guillermo Del Toro’s abandoned Justice League Dark.
The new chief of DC Films has officially begun his stint handling WBD’s DC Comics-based live-action properties. Even through his jam-packed schedule handling MCU as well as DCU projects, the filmmaker has remained active on his Twitter handle, interacting with fans. Although Gunn’s plans for the SX universe remain a mystery, his activity on social media leaves a trail of breadcrumbs for fans to indulge in.
The director’s Halloween tweet featuring Boston Brand’s Deadman has been considered one such cryptic tease at a potential project. Readers can check it out below.
While Deadman has never had a live-action portrayal, the character was recently shown in the Injustice animated movie. Even DC’s pantheon, the Goddess of Karma, Rama Kushna was introduced. But since the DC Film franchise was struggling to produce good titles based on its A-tier Justice League characters, any hope of seeing Deadman and other supernatural DC characters like John Constantine felt like a lost cause. However, fans believe Gunn is the right creative to establish these characters, especially due to his expertise in horror.

With Gunn and producer Peter Safran’s role at WBD as DC Studios CEOs in effect, many are under the impression that the two were responsible for DC’s Starlight season 3’s cancellation. Moreover, the Green Lantern series is also getting an overhaul, it’s looking increasingly likely the duo’s strategy for DCU may already be at play.
In the case of considering a live-action debut for DC’s dark characters, Netflix’s Sandman series has served as a fine example of their success among audiences, especially Johanna Constantine. At the moment, A J.J. Abrams-produced Constantine 2 is in development with Keanu Reeves reprising as the occult detective Hellblazer. Other DC-based projects by Bad Robots like Madame X are currently on sale for other networks to pick up. Perhaps, Deadman could make a cameo appearance in the sequel? Let’s hope so .
