DCU’s Superman movie soundtrack is complete, here’s how James Gunn is using score during production

According to a recent update from James Gunn, a new theme for DCU’s Superman movie has likely already been composed and is currently being utilized on the set. The DC Studios co-CEO revealed to a fan that the background score by John Murphy is almost complete, prompting more excitement among fans to hear the score composed for Gunnverse’s Man of Steel.

The first live-action DC Studios project under James Gunn’s helm is filming in downtown Cleveland, USA. David Corenswet‘s Clark Kent Rachel Bronahan‘s Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult‘s Lex Luthor have not yet been spotted filming on set. However, recent images from the production revealed that the film crew is shooting scenes related to Lex Luthor’s company.

According to Gunn’s comment, the BGM for Lex Luthor may already be put to use, possibly even to help Hoult tap into the character’s criminal nature. While replying to a fan’s inquiry on whether the original Superman theme would be used in the movie, Gunn clarified, “John Murphy completed most of the score before shooting (as always we write first so we can play on set as we shoot).

John Williams’ classic Superman theme was influenced in Danny Elfman‘s score for Henry Cavill‘s iteration of the Supe in 2017’s Justice League. Since then, Supes’ score took a controversial turn as many DCEU fans associated Hans Zimmer‘s iconic Man of Steel score as the definitive BGM. Though with the entire Snyder-built universe biting the dust, that sentiment appears to be a thing of the past.

Murphy’s score for films like 28 Weeks Later and Sunshine is a testament to his ability to produce iconic music. Furthermore, the composer is accustomed to writing scores for blockbuster comic book movies such as Kick Ass, The Suicide Squad and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

The Superman movie boasts a huge cast with other notable DCU characters confirmed to make appearances such as Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion) and Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced). Mikaela Hoover and Christopher MacDonald recently joined the project to play as Daily Planet journalists Cat Grant and Ron Troupe.

Superman will be released in theaters on July 11, 2025.
