Deadpool 2 actor Lewis Tan, who portrays the character of Shatterstar in the film, says he loves his characters’ 90’s looking costume.
TheWrap recently caught up with Tan to talk about his role and character in the Deadpool sequel film and his family’s connection to Tim Burton’s 1989 film, Batman. When asked about Shatterstar’s old-fashioned costume in the film, the actor said that he thinks the costume is pretty awesome.
“It’s funny that his costume is still very 90s looking but he also has a modern look with the leather jacket,” Tan said. “I love the costume and I think it’s awesome.”
Tan’s father, Philip Tan, who is a legendary actor and a stunt performer, first appeared in Tim Burton’s 1989 film Batman. Philip Tan played the role of a baddie in the film who faced off against Michael Keaton’s Batman.
During the interview, Tan credited DC Comics and the 1989 Batman film for the beginning of his father and his filming career.
“I kind of owe it to DC and Batman in a way because it brought my family here into the business,” Tan said. “They gave my father a huge start. He was the national champion of gymnastics and taekwondo in England. He got one of his first starts on ‘Batman.’ He was the fight choreographer and did a lot of crazy stunts.”
The Shatterstar actor also compared his Deadpool 2 role with that of his father’s role in Burton’s Batman film. He said that their characters have a lot of similarities.
“[He was] the goon that flips over the fence, lands with the swords and pull them out,” Tan added. “Now it comes full circle because I’m doing the same type of thing. Then Batman kicks him in the face.”
Directed by David Leitch, Deadpool 2 is currently playing in theaters now. In the film, Ryan Reynold’s Deadpool and his X-Force team that consists of Marvel characters Bedlam, Domino, Zeitgeist, Shatterstar, Colossus and Negasonic Teenage Warhead will be seen protecting a young mutant from Josh Brolin’s Cable.
Deadpool 2 is expected to earn about $150 million in its opening weekend. It remains to be seen if the film will be able to take down Marvel Studios blockbuster Avengers: Infinity War at the box office.
