Deadpool 3 fans react to Ryan Reynolds announcing Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine return to MCU, Logan director responds

Ryan Reynolds has broken the internet with his Deadpool 3 announcement confirming Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine will return, as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While the surprising news has sent shockwaves to the Marvel fandom, it also prompted Logan director James Mangold’s response.

What seemed like another innocent ad for Reynolds’ gin brand turned out to be an update on Deadpool 3. In the video, Reynolds initially acknowledges the disappointment that followed at D23 since many expected breadcrumbs on the third installment. But the wait was worth it as the closing notes from the Deadpool star confirm the X-men actor’s return, “Hey, Hugh, you want to play Wolverine one more time?” to which Jackman replies “Yeah, sure Ryan,” The announcement clip ends with the Deadpool logo being slashed by Wolverine’s adamantium claws with Marvel Studios on top.

Mangold had an interesting response to the news, sharing a GIF of Logan being pinned to a tree by X-24, the act that kills him in the 2017’s blockbuster. The cryptic tweet initially led many to jump to conclusions that the director was not in support of the decision but the Ford v Ferrari helmer was quick to clarify in a follow-up assuring fans assuring any creative choice by the Deadpool 3 team with Wolverine will not erase Logan. Readers can check out his response and the fandom’s reaction below.

Marvel Studios recently hinted at Wolverine’s existence in the MCU through She-Hulk. It left the fandom speculating if Radcliffe could take over the role if Jackman was out. But PursueNews pointed out the possibility of Fox’s contractual obligation (which transferred to Disney and remains in effect until 2023) potentially influencing Marvel to pursue the original live-action X-Men characters.

It will be interesting to see which route Marvel chief Kevin Feige chooses, could Jackman play the same Wolverine that’s presumed to be dead after the events of Logan? Or will this be another version from the multiverse, like Reed Richards from Earth-616? In any case, Mangold has given his blessing to Reynolds and director Shawn Levy to pursue this crossover. But fans are already busy speculating if this confirms Jackman’s Wolverine involvement in Secret Wars.

Deadpool 3 starring Reynolds as Wade Wilson with Jackson’s Wolverine will hit theaters on September 2024
