Director Jake Kasdan Confirms Jumanji 3 Filming To Begin Early Next Year, Details

Soon after Dwayne Johnson starrer Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle was released during Christmas last year, it became a big hit at both the domestic and worldwide box offices raking in around grossing $961 million. It became the second highest-grossing movie to-date for Sony Pictures. The film’s success immediately paved way for Jumanji 3.

During a recent interview with Collider, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle director Jake Kasdan who is back to helm Jumanji 3 revealed that the team is hoping to begin filming sometime early next year.

The idea is to make the movie at the beginning of the year if we can get it all worked out,” Kasdan said.

He added that while the team has not yet figured out locations for the upcoming film, they would love to go back to Hawaii where a major portion of Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle was shot. The Hawaiian jungles served as an important backdrop for the last movie.

We have not started figuring out the locations yet,” the director said. “Hawaii was a big part of [Welcome to the Jungle] and we love Hawaii, it would be great to go back there. We’ll see.”

Kasdan said he along with the other film writers are very close to cracking Jumanji 3 story.

We are writing the movie right now,” the director said. “We’re just figuring out what exactly the next movie is gonna be. I am happy to say I feel like we are making nice progress on it and then we have some exciting stuff gone well.”

“It’s a complicated little puzzle, but I think we’ve got some good stuff cooking,” he added.

Kasdan admitted that it won’t be an easy task for them to find an angle for Jumanji 3 that will replicate the success of Welcome to the Jungle. However, he said the team will continue to hold on to that emotional core of the series “in a way that feels earned and a true continuation of the story.”

Actors Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan, and Jack Black will be seen reprising their roles in Jumanji 3 when the film opens in theatres on December 13, 2019.
