Director James Gunn Fails To Convince Disney’s Chairman To Rehire Him

If a new report is to be believed, Walt Disney Studios and Marvel Studios are still adamant on their decision of not reinstating James Gunn as the director of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 after firing him from the project.

The action was taken after Gunn’s controversial tweets on pedophilia and rape resurfaced on social media last month. The studio was quick in taking the call as the comments were not in line with Disney’s family-friendly image.

According to a report coming from Variety, James Gunn met with Disney’s Alan Horn earlier this week to discuss the possibility of him returning to direct the third installment. But, unfortunately, the meeting couldn’t convince Horn to give Gunn another chance.

The report claims that as Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige was out of town, he could not be in attendance for the crucial meeting. Feige is rumored to have constantly pushed Disney to rehire Gunn.  But, now as the studio is not ready to recall its decision about Gunn, the Marvel President will ultimately have to stand by the studio’s call and respect it.

James Gunn has received a lot of support from his loyal Guardians of the Galaxy fans as well as the franchise’s cast members. Actors Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, Pom Klementieff, Karen Gillan, Vin Diesel, and Michael Rooker came together in his support and signed a letter urging Disney to reconsider and bring Gunn back.  In fact, Bautista even threatened to quit if in case the studio refuses to use Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 script.

As per the report, Disney and Marvel will continue the search for a new director for the next GOTG film once Feige is back in town. It remains unclear if the change in the director’s seat will affect Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 production schedule. The film is expected to enter into production and filming at the beginning of 2019.
