Earlier, it was reported that The Batman script originally written by Ben Affleck and Geoff Johns had been rewritten to start off fresh. Fans were disappointed by the news as it would mean that Joe Manganiello’s Deathstroke might not be the main villain or even be cast in the film.
Unfortunately, the news was true after all. Recently, Matt Reeves spoke to Josh Horowitz on MTV’s Happy Sad Confused podcast. During their talk, the director was also asked if he was starting off the earlier script written by Affleck and Johns. Here’s what he had to say (Props to Batman-News for spotting the scoop).
“No,” Reeves said. “It’s a new story. It’s just starting again. I’m excited about it. I think it’s going to be really cool.” Fans can listen to Reeves talking about The Batman at 30:00-minute mark.
The earlier script originally cast Manganiello as Deathstroke, the main villain in The Batman. However, as Reeves is starting with a whole new script, the possibility of the mercenary character being the main highlight of the film is less likely.
In another interview with Uproxx, Reeves also revealed that Warner Bros. assured him that he could direct The Batman the way he wanted it to be. While it’s exciting to hear that the director won’t face hurdles with the studio, it could also disappoint us if his noir driven, detective version was to cast another villain instead of Deathstroke.
Fans would have to wait for a while to hear news on The Batman as Reeves also revealed that he needed a break and Warner Bros. seems to be okay with it. It’s unlikely for the studio to make any sort of big announcement for the Dark Knight film at SDCC 2017.
