DeWanda Wise of She’s Gotta Have It fame has landed with a supporting role in Disney/Marvel Studios’ Captain Marvel with Brie Larson playing the lead title role.
Marvel Studios is all set to begin work for a short period of time on their first ever female-led film Captain Marvel. The team will get into full production later this spring, and hence Marvel is busy getting all its’ cast and crew in order before they begin.
Directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, the film will also be the first MCU movie directed by a female. Apart from Brie Larson, no other actress has been cast in any female role. It was during the San Diego Comic-Con in 2016 that Larson was announced as the main lead.
As per Deadline, DeWanda Wise fresh off a role in She’s Gotta Have It is the newest member to be added to the cast. Wise played Nola Darling in the Netflix’s series. The show, based on Spike Lee’s film of the same name released in 1986, renewed the show for yet another season earlier this week.
Even though Captain Marvel will be Wise’s first movie role, the actress has previously starred in the series Shots Fired and Underground before being cast in She’s Gotta Have It.
There is no information about the role that DeWanda Wise will be essaying in Captain Marvel except that she will be a co-star. It is hence possible that Wise would be playing Carol’s best friend and fellow superhero Monica Rambeau.
If this is the case, the role is extremely crucial for the actress and will help her forge ahead in her acting career.
The script for the film, written by Geneva Robertson-Dworet, is based on an earlier draft by Nicole Perlman and Meg LeFauve.
Back in November 2017, Jude Law was announced as the male lead to play opposite Brie Larson in the film. The star-cast of Captain Marvel also includes Samuel L. Jackson, and Ben Mendelsohn.
Captain Marvel – Story
The film narrates the story of Marvel character Carol Danvers, who is an Airforce pilot. Danvers meets with an accident in which her DNA gets fused with that of an alien. That incident gives her immense superpowers of strength, energy project and flight.
Captain Marvel is scheduled to release in theaters on March 8, 2019.
