It looks like the MCU is back on track with its once set plan for phase 4 as Disney has decided to bring back James Gunn to direct Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3. The news comes from Deadline and multiple other agencies have also confirmed the report to be true.
Gunn was fired from the threequel project back in July 2018 after some of his old tweets about pedophilia and rape was brought to light. After weeks following the firing, It seemed like Marvel and Disney were on the search for a new director to take over the project. But according to THR’s insiders, the studio never engaged in the search but instead had returned to Gunn and made a deal.
After Gunn’s exit from Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3, the director was hired by Warner Bros. to write and direct The Suicide Squad. The movie recently recast Idris Elba to play as Deadshot and the plot will also revolve around the character. Gunn will work on both projects with Suicide Squad being the first.
It seems like Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 won’t begin filming anytime soon. but on the bright side, Gunn already has a script which likely seems to have been greenlighted by the studio as well. So the threequel project will be fast-tracking after Gunn finishes Suicide Squad.
Disney is currently on the verge of closing in its merger acquisition with 20th Century Fox. It seems like a good sign that the studio decided to give Gunn a second chance amid its billion dollar deal that brings back all Marvel characters to the MCU.
Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 did not have a release date assigned even before reports came out that the project was delayed. but Gunn had stated that the movie would release sometime in 2020. But it seems like the movie would be slated for 2021 or 2022.
