Disney’s Purchase Of 21st Century Fox’s Marvel Assets Will Not Affect Ongoing X-Men Projects

Walt Disney’s acquisition of 21st Century Fox’s assets in the works, which is still in the pending state, will bring the X-Men franchise under a new head. But it won’t likely affect the development of the X-Men films which are currently in the works.

During a recent interview with IGN, X-Men series producer and Dark Phoenix director-writer Simon Kinberg offered some updates on the status of various X-Men movie projects that are currently being working upon.

“Gambit has a great script and we’re looking to start that movie early next year,” Kinberg said. “Multiple Man, that script’s being worked on right now. [With X-Force] we’re just waiting for Drew Goddard to be done with releasing his film that comes out in a few weeks, and then he’ll get started on that script to direct.”

The Dark Phoenix director also confirmed the Channing Tatum Gambit standalone movie will adopt a “romantic comedy” tone due to the nature of Gambit, himself. He said that the film’s main character will be allowed to dictate tone or genre, same as Deadpool and Logan.

Deadpool was an R-rated, raunchy comedy, Logan was a western, Gambit’s gonna be a romantic comedy, and New Mutants is very decidedly a horror film,” Kinberg said.

There were earlier reports which suggested that Dark Phoenix and New Mutants would be the last 2 Marvel project under Fox after which the properties will be part of the MCU. But, it seems like the acquisition isn’t stopping Fox from going ahead and developing other X-Men films like Gambit, Multiple Man X-Force etc. Earlier in February, it was revealed that Director Tim Miller was attached to direct a project codenamed 143 which is a standalone film for the character Kity Pryde.

Last week during a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, when Disney CEO Bob Iger was asked if the Disney-Fox deal will see Marvel taking over Fox’s X-Men and Fantastic Four franchise with Kevin Feige as the head, he said it would definitely make sense.

I think it only makes sense,” Iger said. “I want to be careful here because of what’s been communicated to the Fox folks, but I think they know. It only makes sense for Marvel to be supervised by one entity. There shouldn’t be two Marvels.”

Dark Phoenix is slated to release on February 14, 2019, while New Mutants will open in theatres on August 2, 2019. The Gambit movie doesn’t have a release date attached yet.
