Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is barely days away from its premiere and while the sequel’s sheer hype is partly due to its exceptional multiverse narrative recently introduced in Spider-Man: No Way Home, MCU fans and even producer Kevin Feige are further thrilled to see Director Sam Raimi’s iconic horror blueprint. In fact, recent new TV spots featuring Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange and Elizabeth Olsen’s Wanda are highlighting Raimi’s Evil Dead-esque eerie sequences and fans are all for it.
Before Doctor Strange 2, if anyone had told Feige that veteran comic book movie director Raimi would be interested in directing a Marvel movie, especially after his fiasco with Sony over 2007’s Spider-Man 3, the MCU chief would have likely chuckled over the long odds of persuading the Army of Darkness director to helm a PG-13 Marvel movie. But in 2022 it’s a reality that even Feige considers a “dream come true” moment, in a new featurette.
The behind-the-scenes video also shows Raimi addressing how he got to sign a deal with Marvel Studios to direct Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. He even notes he’s a “big fan” of 2016’s Doctor Strange directed by Scott Derrickson.
MCU always intended to explore the “mind-bending, frightening side of the multiverse”

“Sam’s become known for this terrorizing cinema experience,” added Olsen. And it’s surely assuring to hear Raimi has included Jump-scare moments during intense scenes, which could arguably make the sequel MCU’s first horror outing. Additionally, the multiverse concept as well as the horror element was explored in the Disney Plus series, What If…? with episode 5’s storyline particularly introducing a post-apocalypse world where The Avengers are infected by a zombie plague. Interestingly, both themes seem to be of influence in the upcoming sequel.
“That was always where we were headed with the sequel to Doctor Strange knowing that we wanted to explore the mind-bending frightening side of the multiverse,” added Feige. Readers can check out the video below.
More details regarding the making of Doctor Strange 2 will roll out as the cast and crew are currently on their promotional tour. Meanwhile, fans can look forward to new TV spots teasing newcomer Xochitl Gomez’s America Chavez, Rachel McAdams’s Christine Palmer and more.
Doctor Strange and the multiverse arrives on May 6, 2022.
