Doctor Strange 2 trailer & poster: 20 reveals and theories tease Captain Carter, Mr. Fantastic, Deadpool & more

Doctor Strange 2 trailer & poster: 20 reveals and theories tease Captain Carter, Mr. Fantastic, Deadpool & more

Marvel Studios has done it again with the new Doctor Strange 2 trailer unpacking the multiverse nightmare caused by Benedict Cumberbatch’s Sorcerer Supreme and his attempt to undo the mystical ramifications alongside Elisabeth Olsen’s Wanda and Xochitl Gomez’s America Chavez – the latest young superhero to enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Yet knowing Marvel’s marketing strategy – the 2-minute long trailer clearly has a lot more reveals that many may have missed out on.

The promo campaign for Spider-Man: No Way Home served as the finest example that Marvel Studios always brings its A-game in marketing upcoming MCU films. Though, one can never be certain if scenes shown in trailers weren’t edited to portray a different context than the film’s actual plot.

Still, several story elements of No Way Home were revealed in bare glimpses during the teaser. Similarly, in hopes that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness new trailer followed the same formula, here are 20 big reveals and theories from breaking down the Super Bowl trailer, teaser and poster.

NOTE: All reveals and theories are from Doctor Strange 2’s new trailer, TV Spot shown during Super Bowl 2022 commercial and the new poster.

America Chavez’s abilities

America Chavez

The relatively new and young superhero has left many MCU fans confused over what she brings to the table. Fortunately, just through the first few seconds of the promo – America Chavez is shown confronting (barely) a multiverse monster and reveals her supernatural powers by opening a star-shaped portal. In the comics, Ms. America can traverse the Multiverse through her Star Portals.

Phase 4’s multiverse chaos is here and Doctor Strange can’t stop its consequences with a one-spell fix like in No Way Home. And this ‘clear as a day’ scene confirms the aftermath of Strange’s “desecration of reality” affecting the main timeline.

Fall of Kamar-taj

The home to Sorcerers and mystics of the world, Kamar-taj is unfortunately no longer safe from outside threats. The trailer shows a humongous dark cloud covering up the place. Other sequences from the trailer also revealed destruction-heavy action sequences in Kamar-taj.

Rintrah revealed

Rintrah Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

A character that’s existed in Marvel lore since 1986, Rintrah makes a brief appearance at 0:53 and 0:54 seconds of the trailer. In Marvel comics, Rintrah is from the planet R’Vaal and though wasn’t initially the “mystics art” material – he became Strange’s apprentice and has abilities that could match the Sorcerer Supreme himself.

Mordo (Chiwetel Ejiofor) was right, Stephen’s “desecration of reality” does not go unpunished and in fact, the Masters of mystics art is restrained and presented to what seems like a council protecting the multiverse, similar to the Time-Keepers. Reports emerged earlier this year that Tom Hiddleston’s Loki will appear in Doctor Strange 2, connecting the movie to the Disney Plus show of the same name.

Ultron robots/Iron legion drones

No MCU fan could overlook Strange being hauled by a bunch of robots with Ultron’s menacing design. Yet it could be the Iron legion drones created by Tony Stark a.k.a Superior Iron Man variant. Nonetheless, it’s a showstopper scene definitely deserving fan’s dissent to uncover more details.

MCU’s Illuminati

MCU illuminati in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

Insiders have long reported the arrival of MCU’s Illuminati, a group compromising of Professor X, Black Panther, Mr. Fantastic, Namor, Black Bolt and Iron Man. A secret organization formed to protect the world from future conflicts and from the looks of it, Stephen Strange is presented to the same Illuminati council of members.

Patrick Stewart’s Professor X

The main takeaway of Doctor Strange 2 trailer was the “mystery voice” from the council confirming Patrick Stewart’s return as Charles Xavier, the leader of X-Men from 20th Century Fox’s shared Marvel Universe. Does this open the gates for other Fox-made Marvel characters to appear in MCU? Let’s hope it does.

MCU’s Reed Richards

Some eagle-eyed fans have been zooming in on particular scenes from the trailer with the mysterious council being on top of everyone’s breakdown list. Surprisingly, the person seated among the probable Illuminati council seems to be Mr. Fantastic a.k.a Reed Richards. Apparently, casting for MCU’s Fantastic Four movie has also begun and Jon Watts will be helming Marvel’s first family flick.

Defender Strange

Defender Strange

Right after America Chavez’s scene with the multiverse monster, as she’s wrapped into a star-shaped portal – a bare glimpse of Doctor Strange can be spotted, added, the 30 second TV spot shown for television audiences offered a clear shot of the superhero donning the Defenders edition costume from Matt Fraction’s comics run. Is the sorcerer Supreme taking on the role as a Defender of the multiverse as one among the Illuminati? It’s too soon to tell.

Strange Supreme is in fact Sinister Supreme

Doctor Strange 2

Sinister Strange in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

Did Marvel really take direct inspiration from the Disney Plus What If…? series? Not quite since fans’ presumption that Evil Strange is in fact called “Strange Supreme” was shattered after the new trailer’s caption refers the antagonist as “Sinister Supreme”.

Mysterious ‘Captain Marvel’-Esque character?

Is that Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel or Teyonah Parris’s Monica Rambeau as Captain Marvel variant or maybe Lashana Lynch‘s Maria Rambeau? While there are lot of theories surfacing on social media regarding who or what the mysteriously glowing aura character could be –the radiating energy is similar to Captain Marvel’s supernova mode. Yet if true, we’d see two of MCU’s powerhouse characters going head-to-head (Captain Marvel vs. Wanda).

Scarlet Witch meets past self from WandaVision

Doctor Strange 2

Wanda Doctor Strange 2/Marvel Studios

A post-credits scene from WandaVision confirmed the show’s connection to Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. So it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the sequel is revisiting Wanda and Vision’s Westview home. Though it’s certainly not a happy memory to look back to for Scarlet Witch and could be a prominent scene in the movie as well.

Zombie Wanda or is the Scarlet Witch hurt?

Zombie Scarlet Witch Doctor Strange 2

Wanda has a dark side that no superhero, not even Vision would consider fighting and the “What If… zombies!?” episode from the animated Marvel series showed viewers why. But did Doctor Strange 2 tap into the same “Zombie Wanda” iteration? Although the TV spot showed a horrifying bloodied Wanda somewhat move like her zombie counterpart, it’s still unclear as another shot shows a gory Scarlet Witch but in her original form.

Wong is hurt or worse

Could the new Sorcerer Supreme be in grave danger due to the events unfolding in Multiverse of Madness, or worse – could MCU be losing another fan-favorite character? That seems to be the question in many fans’ minds. One sequence, possibly the climax scene shows Wong (Benedict Wong) barely hanging by a thread. On the brighter side, fans could be jumping the gun since No Way Home showed a similar moment with Zendaya’s MJ falling to her death but getting rescued at the final moment in fan-service style by Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man.  So Maybe Strange could come to his rescue? Time will tell.

Zombie Doctor Strange?

Zombie Doctor Strange

Zombie Strange in Doctor Strange in the multiverse of Madness

A Sam Raimi movie with no zombies doesn’t seem like a possibility in any timeline so that seems to be what the Evil Dead director could be presenting through Zombie Doctor Strange in Multiverse of Madness TV spot. The character shares a major resemblance to the animated What If…? counterpart so there’s no better indicating Raimi is adapting the Marvel Zombies mythos.

Wanda can access multiversal barriers?

Speaking of What If…?, Wanda Maximoff may have been snooping around The Darkhold too much and could’ve amplified her powers more than her past self from WandaVision. It could be argued the Scarlet Witch may even be accessing multiversal barriers, similar to The Watcher from the animated series. The shot showcased above shares too much resemblance to ignore.

Superior Ironman or Nova variant

Superior Iron Man, Doctor Strange 2

Superior Iron Man

While half the MCU fandom remains convinced Doctor Strange 2 is bringing some version of Captain Marvel – others are under the presumption that the energy radiating character is none other than Tom Cruise portraying as Superior Ironman, a variant that’s been a fan-favorite in Marvel comics. In fact, Superior Iron Man began trending on Twitter and even prompted comic book writer Tom Taylor, the creator of Tony’s Endo-Sym armor to comment on the topic stating, “It was designed to glow red/orange when he was angry.” If that wasn’t enough – some even believe it could be the debut of Nova thought it seems uncertain Marvel Studios would introduce a titular hero in a movie with a massive roster.

Captain Carter’s shield

Aside from the blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment from the Multiverse of Madness trailer, some turned towards the new poster featuring the Sorcerer Supreme. A closer look at the key art shows Captain Carter’s shield in the shattered piece, seemingly confirming Carter’s variant appearance.

Deadpool?

Similar to the No Way Home poster revealing secret cameos – many believe the poster also showcases the Merc with a mouth, as shown in the image above. But it could be Tom Holland’s Spider-Man as well since the character has a cameo appearance. Nevertheless, Fox’s shared universe seems to be part of the MCU thanks to the multiverse chaos so there’s no harm in hoping Ryan Reynolds may have suited up for a brief Deadpool appearance.
