New reports suggest Marvel Studios has hired director Scott Derrickson to helm Doctor Strange 2. Actor Benedict Cumberbatch made his debut as the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Sorcerer Supreme in 2016’s Doctor Strange, which was written and directed by Derrickson and grossed $677.7 million worldwide. Derrickson’s directorial credits also include The Day the Earth Stood Still, The Exorcism of Emily Rose, and Sinister.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the studio has already finalized Derrickson to helm the new installment. However, the search for a writer to pen the script for the film is still on. It remains unclear if Doctor Strange co-writer C. Robert Cargill will return to scripting duties.
Although nothing much is known about Doctor Strange 2 as of yet, it is confirmed that the film will see the return of Cumberbatch as Stephen Strange, the doctor turned master of the mystic arts, Benedict Wong as Doctor’s mystical associate Master Wong, and Rachel McAdams as Christine Palmer, Stephen Strange’s love interest.
The studio is reportedly planning to get the film’s script done by 2019 to lead to a spring 2020 production launch. If all goes according to plan, Doctor Strange 2 will likely get a May 2021 release.
Aside from 2016’s Doctor Strange, Cumberbatch has also appeared as Stephen Strange in Thor: Ragnarok and Avengers: Infinity War in which he was turned to a pile of dust by Thanos’ deadly finger snap.
While Marvel Studios is mostly keeping quiet as regard to the future of all those who got wiped off due to Thanos’ snap, Doctor Strange 2 has confirmed that the master of the mystic arts will resurrect from the dead in the upcoming Avengers: Endgame. So, fans won’t have to wait for much longer to see the Sorcerer Supreme casting spells again and ready to go on a new magical adventure.
