Doctor Strange Director Shares Excitement Over James Gunn Directing Suicide Squad 2

Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson seems excited about the reports that claim Warner Bros. is currently in talks with James Gunn to direct the Suicide Squad sequel, possibly titled Suicide Squad 2. Gunn is already attached to the film as a writer, which will serve as a re-launch of the franchise rather than being a sequel to the first film.

Derrickson took to Twitter to express his excitement over the news. He noted that while he is sad about Gunn being separated from the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, he is happy that his friend is finally moving on in his career that too with another major franchise.

I’ll always be sad that James Gunn was separated from his Guardians children. But if true, I’m damn happy he’s moving on to another major franchise. Go crush it my friend,” Derrickson’s tweet read.

Disney fired Gunn last year after some of his controversial tweets and posts resurfaced on social media, creating quite a bit of controversy. He had previously written and directed Guardians of the Galaxy and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 for Marvel. It is rumored that Marvel will still be using Gunn’s script for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3.

Talking about Doctor Strange 2, the sequel film will see a number of returning faces including director Scott Derrickson and screenwriter C. Robert Cargill. Cargill is set to pen down the film’s script that will first be reviewed by Marvel Studios before getting finalized.

While there are no plot details available currently, Cargill revealed during a Q&A last year that they were planning to use Nightmare as a villain in the sequel, alongside Mordo, who was set up as a villain during the post-credit scene in the first Doctor Strange movie.

Doctor Strange 2 does not yet have a release date set. However, rumors are that Marvel is eyeing a summer 2021 release window for the film.
