It seems Robert Downey Jr. aka Iron Man is still pretty much interested in reprising his role as the world’s greatest detective in Sherlock Holmes 3.
During a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly for the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War movie, Downey Jr. mentioned that he definitely has plans to move ahead with Sherlock Holmes 3 as well as several other projects.
“Then there’s all this stuff down the pike,” Downey Jr. said. “We’re looking at another Sherlock Holmes, we’re developing Perry Mason for HBO. I still want to do Pinocchio.”
Notably, Warner Bros.’ Sherlock Holmes franchise is based on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s detective mysteries. The franchise’s first film, titled after the main character’s name, was released in 2009 under director Guy Ritchie. Downey portrayed the iconic detective alongside Jude Law (Captain Marvel) who played Dr. John Watson, and Rachel McAdams (Doctor Strange) as the doomed Irene Adler. The film was a big hit and earned around $524 million worldwide.
The second installment in the franchise, titled Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, was released in 2011 with both with Downey Jr. and Law reprising their roles alongside Jared Harris who joined the sequel as the iconic antagonist, Professor Moriarty. While the sequel wasn’t as well-received by critics as the first film, it did quite well at the box office fetching around $545 million worldwide.
Warner Bros. went ahead with their plans of developing Sherlock Holmes 3 in 2011 when they hired Iron Man 3‘s Drew Pearce to write the script for the film. But, for some reasons, the film was put on the backburner. The last time we got some update about the film was in October 2016 when Warner Bros. assembled a writers room for Sherlock Holmes 3, tapping Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy), Justin Malen (Baywatch), Gary Whitta (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story), Kieran Fitzgerald (Snowden), and Geneva Dworet-Robertson (Tomb Raider).
Now that the Iron Man star has seemingly committed to getting Sherlock Holmes 3 made, we are hopeful that more news and updates about the film will be announced soon.
