After the 2016 released Ghostbusters reboot film failed to impress critics and fans, it became uncertain if the filmmakers would come up with a new film in the franchise. Well, now, it’s confirmed that Sony Pictures is finally moving ahead with the franchise.
According to Entertainment Weekly, Sony Pictures has roped in Jason Reitman, who happens to be the son of original Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman, to direct the next installment in the Ghostbusters franchise.
During an interview with EW, Reitman revealed that the new Ghostbusters movie will be a direct continuation of the 1984 original film and will completely ignore the events of the 2016 reboot.
“I’ve always thought of myself as the first Ghostbusters fan, when I was a 6-year-old visiting the set. I wanted to make a movie for all the other fans,” Reitman said. “This is the next chapter in the original franchise. It is not a reboot. What happened in the ‘80s happened in the ‘80s, and this is set in the present day.”
There’s currently no information if the original stars Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, or Ernie Hudson will return in the film or if it would feature new characters.
“This is very early, and I want the film to unwrap like a present,” Reitman said adding, “We have a lot of wonderful surprises and new characters for the audience to meet.”
The news has already exited Ghostbuster fans who immediately took to social media to express their excitement for the film. While some were happy that the new film will return to the iconic world of the ’80s, others were disappointed to know that the upcoming film will completely ignore the 2016 reboot.

I’m totally fine with there being a new Ghostbusters movie set in the original universe – I just hate that the worst people will take credit for “winning” because they were so against the idea of female Ghostbusters. Sigh.
