Fans stand with Henry Cavill’s decision to leave The Witcher series, supporters blame Netflix writer’s room for “hating the source material”

Henry Cavill has hung up his Geralt armor to make way for Superman, that’s the emotion among fans since Netflix announced that The Witcher series would replace the titular role played by the Man of Steel star with Liam Hemsworth. While the shocking announcement left the massive fanbase heartbroken, many still supported Cavill’s decision, largely by pointing to the report that The Witcher’s writers disliked Andrzej Sapkowski’s book and the CDPR’s games.

With Warner Bros. film on the lookout for potential filmmakers to helm a Superman 2 movie for DCEU — Cavill’s future as a movie star seemed secured in Hollywood. And any doubts about seeing him in a sequel to the 2013’s Man of Steel were dismissed after the star himself confirmed his departure from playing as Geralt of Rivia in The Witcher season 4. The upcoming season 3 is scheduled to arrive in the Summer of 2023 on the streaming platform.

The general assumption among DCU aficionados is that Cavill’s Superman career would be too demanding to also play the leading character in The Witcher show. Even so, the most critical dissent viewpoint insists that the problem lies in Netflix’s writers’ room for The Witcher, as can be seen in reactions below. Earlier last week, Beau DeMayo, former writer and producer of the series revealed in an interview with The Direct that writers despised the source material to the point of mocking it.

“I’ve been on show – namely Witcher – where some of the writers were not or actively disliked the books and games (even actively mocking the source material.) It’s a recipe for disaster and bad morale. Fandom as a litmus test checks egos, and makes all the long nights worth it. You have to respect the work before you’re allowed to add to its legacy.”

DeMayo’s statement has been echoed by many fans claiming it could be one of the factors that may have influenced Cavill to exit the Netflix show. Though note, there’s been no report indicating such. Moreover, the Justice League actor has remained mum about the ongoing behind-the-scenes work for Man of Steel 2. Nevertheless, all eyes are on Cavill’s next appearance on the big screen donning the red cape.
