‘Feels bloated’: Superman: Legacy supporting DCU cast compared to Snyder’s Batman v Superman, here’s everything fans have to say on casting Hawkgirl, Mister Terrific, Green Lantern & Metamorpho

Superman: Legacy is starting to look like a full circle to Snyderverse’s Batman v Superman, a DCEU film once critiqued for rushing the introduction of Wonder Woman & the Dark Knight through cameos. 7 years later and James Gunn, in some measure – is following the same route to introduce several new DCU characters namely Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner’s version of Green Lantern and Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho. Here’s what the CBM community has to say about the new additions to DC Studios’ Gods and Monsters.

Overcrowded, bloated, or the perfect setup for Superman in a world already filled with DC’s finest superheroes – these are some of the terms being thrown around when discussing Superman: Legacy. Unfortunately, the latest round of casting has not been met with the same enthusiasm as David Corenswet & Rachel Brosnahan‘s hiring for the DCU.

The reboot Superman project was expected to be a standalone centering over Clark Kent and Lois Lane. However, the addition of several other characters has received mixed reactions. An ensemble film with “mismash of DC cameos” as critic Shera Farooqi noted.

The director and DC Studios chief clarified “The primary story most definitely revolves around Superman and Lois” while interacting with a fan on Threads. Even so, a few Snyderverse fans pointed out the resemblance of DCU’s Chapter 1 setup to Zack Snyder‘s DC Extended Universe.

While Man of Steel was all about the red-caped superhero from Krypton – the follow-up pitted Superman against Batman while also using the sequel as a platform to debut Gal Gadot‘s Wonder Woman. In addition, The Flash, Aquaman and Cyborg were also introduced in brief appearances teasing the build-up for Justice League.

Although the Amazonian goddess’ casting was heavily praised – Batman v Superman was still critiqued as a rushed ensemble in response to Marvel Studios’ Avengers. So clearly, DCEU fans have a lot to say regarding the new DC faces debuting in Gunn’s Superman film resembling the previous interconnected universe.

Gunn’s supporter have pushed back on the criticism reminding that the filmmaker is known for introducing delivering a blockbuster through an ensemble featuring titles that still prioritize a single character-driven story like Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 keeping the focus on Rocket Raccoon as the main protagonist.

Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner Green Lantern

Coming to Nathan Fillion’s casting – a large group of fans are disappointed Finn Wittrock was replaced with Fillion to play Guy Gardner’s Green Lantern. In February 2022, the actor revealed he was starting to get into shape for the DC role in the GL HBO Max show Greenlit under the previous regime.

It’s unclear if the Green Lantern Corps series has been scrapped entirely but detractors are not letting the surprising replacement slide, “Finn Wittrock was fired as Guy Gardner” wrote user @batsquez, puzzled over the changes.

It should be pointed out the GL series would have shown Gardner in the1980s. Moreover, Wittrock was also cast for embodying the character description, “1980s hyper-patriotism” which does not line with a modern-day portrayal in Legacy.

Some are also puzzled if Nathan’s casting essentially indicates Gunn’s The Suicide Squad is not canon to Gods and Monsters. Fillion played T.D.K. a.k.a The Detachable Kid in the Task Force X film and was one of the characters to survive the ordeal. Perhaps, these changes would be attributed to the consequences of The Flash.

Isabela Merced’s Hawkgirl & Edi Gathegi’s Mister Terrific

While Gunn’s plans to introduce Hawkgirl in the first slate of DCU were met with surprise – the director’s interest to establish Mister Terrific was expected ever since his cryptic tease. Neither the report nor Gunn addressed if Hawkgirl would be the New Earth’s iteration as Kendra Saunders or Earth-One’s Shayera Thal. Though the Dora actress shared a picture of Kendra’s adaptation which many are seeing as confirmation.

Isabela Merced fans stans are delighted by the casting since the 22-year actress auditioned/ was on the shortlist for Batgirl, Cyclone and Ratcatcher II. Merced’s casting has not received backlash unlike the rest though there is a growing campaign to greenlight a solo feature for Hawkgirl.

Hawkgirl & Mister Terrific’s addition has fans convinced the Justice Society of America (JSA) will get their due in DCU. It has raised questions if this could indicate Black Adam’s JSA characters would return, particularly Hawkman. Though there is a significant age difference between Aldis Hodge and Isabel, “they’re like 14 years apart in age” noted one user on Twitter.

To some, Edi Gathegi’s Mister Terrific casting is a redemption considering the actor has already played a shortly lived superhero character for Fox’s Marvel. Sadly, Darwin received a quick death in X-Men: First Class while audiences expected the character to have a long run.

Fans think Anthony Carrigan’s Metamorpho confirms Terrifics team-up

With a SAG-AFTRA strike potentially looming – it seems like studios are attempting to wrap up negotiations before the union instructs actors to halt their business conversations. Anthony Carrigan playing Metamorpho will be his third time dabbling with the DC lore (portrayed as The Mist in The Flash and Victor Zsasz in Gotham).

Carrigan’s casting has more or less found fans’ approval though a few also envisioned him possibly portraying Lex Luthor. Clearly, there are two divisions of fandom with one side showing immense support for the world-building through the first DCU film while others are dismissive of the idea of other characters taking the spotlight in the Superman project.

On the bright side, Mister Terrific and Metamorpho have instilled hope over the possibility of a Terrifics ensemble being formed. Casting Plastic Man and Phantom Girl would complete the 4 man team.

Is DC Studios starting off by following in Batman v Superman’s footsteps? well, Gunn disagrees – “I’ve never used one movie to set up another movie. The characters are there because they help to tell Superman’s story better, not so we can set up separate projects in the franchise,” said the director on Threads. “Superman and Lois are the very clear protagonists.”

The auditions for Superman: Legacy is far from over in the meantime, what did you think of the Hawkgirl, Mister Terrific, Green Lantern and Metamorpho appearing in the first DCU film?
