Frank Grillo cannot seem to keep his excitement at bay after recording dialogues for his Rick Flag Sr role in Creature Commandos. The animated DCU project is the first to go into development from James Gunn‘s Gods and Monsters worldbuilding and while DC Studios is yet to announce its release schedule – development is on track going by the actor’s latest update.
The Suicide Squad-Esque live-action series piqued fans’ interest earlier in April when the full cast list was announced including names like David Harbour portraying Eric Frankenstein with the addition of a familiar face from the Peacemaker series, Steve Agee‘s John Economos. But Frank Grillo has long teased his involvement through cryptic posts on social media.
Similarly, the ex-Marvel actor teased his recent recording session for the DCU series. “We just shot some more episodes of Creature Commandos,” said Grillo on his Instagram stories and seemed thrilled about it too.
The actor also tagged James Gunn praising him with the hashtag gineousmaximus and including his DCU character’s name Rick Flag in the caption. While it is not a lot to go on, it looks like the DCU villain ensemble series might not be impacted by the Writers’ strike, especially since James Gunn wrote all the episodes.

While the DC Studios boss is not the showrunner of Creature Commandos, it’s likely he was on deck instructing the actors during the shoot. James Gunn confirmed in April he’d be directing the primary actor’s initial recordings. It remains to be seen which director will sign on to helm the animated series.
Plot details for Creature Commandos are in wraps but the DCU architect confirmed that some of the characters from the animated version will reprise their roles in live-action as well. The show is expected to be similar to Suicide Squad but will consist of Monsters and the team will operate under the orders of Amanda Waller (Viola Davis).
Creature Commandos does not have a release date assigned yet.
