Legendary Comics has announced an all-new graphic novel titled Godzilla: Aftershock which will serve as a prequel to Michael Dougherty’s upcoming film, Godzilla: King of the Monsters. The film will see Godzilla emerge from the depths of the ocean to take on Mothra, Rodan, and the horrifying three-headed monster, King Ghidorah, for the fate of the Earth.
Godzilla: Aftershock is written by Arvid Nelson (Batman: Joker’s Asylum) and illustrated by Drew Edward Johnson (Star Wars X-Wing: Rogue Squadron). It takes place after the first film’s catastrophic events in San Francisco. The publisher has already confirmed the graphic novel, which releases next spring, will feature Godzilla squaring it off with a new monstrous adversary, reported CBR.com.
“Godzilla: Aftershock is yet another exhilarating entry into the canon of the MonsterVerse, and it is especially exciting to introduce fans to a brand new original monster unique to the comic, but true to the legacy of Godzilla,” Robert Napton, Senior Vice President of Legendary Comics, said in an official statement.
The upcoming graphic novel will also shed new light on the Monarch organization, the secretive agency tracking the world’s kaijus, and introduce characters appearing in 2019’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters. Vera Farmiga’s Dr. Emma Russell will be introduced in the comic novel.
The graphic novel’s synopsis reads as follows-
Continuing the story of 2014’s Godzilla after the catastrophic events in San Francisco, the King of the Monsters finds himself once again threatened as a terrifying new foe rises from the depths of the earth, unleashing a series of devastating earthquakes and driven by an unstoppable primal instinct that will test the King of Monsters like never before.
Los Angeles Comic-Con attendees will have the opportunity to get a sneak peek of Godzilla: Aftershock at the Legendary Comics panel “Godzilla: Secrets of the MonsterVerse” on Saturday, Oct. 27. The first 500 attendees will get an exclusive signed/numbered Godzilla poster only available at the panel.
In related news, Total Film recently released a new image from Godzilla: King of the Monsters that shows the three-headed monster King Ghidorah’s foot lurking in the fog. You can check out the picture below.
Godzilla: King of Monsters will arrive in theaters on May 31, 2019.
