After a leaked set photo offered the first look at Grant Gustin’s new The Flash season 5 costume, a lot of fans took to social media to complain about the Flash’s new suit as well as how Gustin looked in it. They also body shamed Gustin for his thin physique.
On Wednesday, Gustin took to Instagram to defend himself and respond to all the negativity going on around. While the actor confirmed that the Flash suit pictures are real, he did assure fans that changes have been made to the costume since the time the picture was taken, and more changes will continue to be made.
“That’s a terrible photo that I was unaware was being taken, much less being posted,” Gustin noted. “Some things need work and they will be worked on. We’ll get there.”
Gustin noted in his post that body shaming is an issue that he doesn’t entertain. He explained that the comments about his body have followed him his whole life and that it needs to stop now.
“As far as the body shaming, That’s what p—— me off. Not even just for my sake. I’ve had 20+ years of kids and adults telling me or my parents I was too thin,” Gustin continued.
The Flash actor also encouraged kids who’ve also been a victim of body shaming and advised them to feel good about their body.
“I’m happy with my body and who I am and other kids who are built like me and thinner than me should be able to feel the same way,” Gustin’s post read. “Not only that, but they should be able to feel like THEY could be a superhero on tv or film or whatever it may be someday. I love the suit that has been designed for me, and I think when everyone sees it in its entirety, you will love it too.”
The original Instagram account that shared The Flash season 5 costume has now removed the post. But the image already seems to have garnered quite the attention on social media. Fans can check out the suit below but clearly, anyone can notice its a work-in-progress.
Fans will next see Grant Gustin reprising his role of Flash in The Flash season 5 which premieres on Tuesday, October 9, on The CW.
